    Some new info on GameSpot...

Fans worried about Dark Souls II straying too far from the original game have reason to relax. Producer Hidetaka Miyazaki said in the latest issue of Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu (via Polygon) that From Software will protect core experiences in the sequel.

"If we're going to announce this as a sequel to Dark Souls then I think there's certainly a core that we need to protect," Miyazaki said. "I'm talking about how we think about the difficulty level and how you achieve things in-game; about the concepts behind the mechanics and level design."

I've read this before, and as obsessed as this community is about any new info on Dark Souls 2, I wouldn't be surprised if most here have already seen it too. Unfortunately, many here have now staunchly committed themselves to the doom and gloom perspective, so I don't think even the words of Miyazaki himself are going to be enough to bring comfort to them until they've seen the game itself in action. Its understandable though, when you think about how much this game means to the community.

As for me, I feel perfectly comfortable in seeing how FROM intends on protecting the core design philosophy of the series while still making the necessary improvements.

Not when his words don't really jive with eachother. Without more info, exect the worst, be very vocal about what you would like to see, hope for the best.

EDIT: Alright, why was that downrepped? Explain how that is worthy of a -1

I really believe that he didn't like leaving Dark Souls II, but he is still part of From, and as such he supports his friends/partners, THAT is exactly why I'm not sure whether or not it's true. I mean I'm not doubting DkS II will be hard, I just think that maybe it will not be hard the same way Dark Souls was.

    PS: Here have a +1.

Let's see what kind of lovely comments there are in that article's comments section... and welcome to the future of the Souls series!

    firstfist:

That is kind of what I took away from the article yesterday. Seems to me they are talking about adding a tutorial at the beggining, and a difficulty slider. Not a big deal.

    Hopefully my impressions were correct.

What is a core experience in Dark souls is so controversial that we spent the last two weeks debating it, that statement means nothing to those who are worried.

This is at least reassurance to a degree, the core to me is realistic combat, difficult bosses, hard to figure story and quite intimidating level design.

    Sounds good to me.

    From that same Interview:

Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls are notoriously unforgiving games with a rich dark atmosphere and overbearing sense of loneliness and foreboding. Addressing the concerns of fans that Dark Souls 2 might lose some of the things that made the previous games so appealing, Miyazaki assured that Dark Souls 2 would remain true to the series. “It’s been announced as a sequel to Dark Souls, so there is definitely a core element that must be preserved.” Miyazaki said.“The difficulty and sense of achievement, the action base, level design concept and so forth. But I feel that also means that aside from such core elements, the rest can be left to the director’s discretion.”

But of course, this still won't be good enough for some.

Thanks Chiz. Logic is apparently bad now, lol.

As I said, I hope its awesome, however being unconcerned about a series I enjoy (especially one published by namco) in the era of samey action game cashins isn't unreasonable, and only by voicing our concerns can they be addressed.

What Dark Souls 2 needs is ... a Hitler Rant about accessibility and what not. I think It would be hilarious. That way concerns could be voiced, while taking jabs at noobs and future gankers, in a humorous manner. big grin

Yeah, that happens sometimes to the more.......opinionated or frequent members, even when they use sound logic. Its the perils of an anonymous rep systems and petty grudges. If its just the 1 though, he's out of down reps for today.

LOL, that would be absolutely hilarious. If I had the time, I'd do it myself. Even if its not the Hitler rant, it's a matter of time before the equivalent comes out.
