So what about Hunters? Build Discussion Empty So what about Hunters? Build Discussion

Post by Carpercen Fri Nov 30, 2012 4:27 pm

Im going to try a hunter build, specialized on bows, and crossbows and maybe daggers or light swords as rapiers.

I was thinkin on DragonSlayer bow, composite bow, black bow of pharis and longbows.

in the case of the Crosbow. the best would be the avelyn right?

So what would be the best? str/dex or pure dex?
should I invest on int/faith for some spells? what spells buff would work with it? dmb? slb? power withing? crystal magic weapon? great magic weapon?

Or should I forge elemental weapons?
in this case, what is best? elemental bow o elemental crossbow? (cause i guess xbows dont scalate right?)

well, I hope the community can helpme with this happy

Also... what is the best estarting class?

    Nice idea,

personally i would go with a pure Dex-build and concentrate on bows since the different arrow types
    can make you more addaptable.
For spells i think Fall Control, Aural Decoy and the miracle Tranquil Walk of Peace.
And i would maybe forge a Lightning Bow since you dont need Fire weapons due to the Fire Arrows.

Well I hope i didnt say anything stupid or redundant. Hope I could help

I never tried those builds but, i would go with pure dex with the black bow of pharis +15(that has amazing scaling), and a lightning Avelyn. I don't recall the Avelyn having great scaling, so I would lightning it, the lightning helps stunlock people.

so, no str for the build? what about the dragonslayer bow?
it deald good damage, but is more slow, also requires str...
    what do you think?

wasn't there something that made you reload and fire bows/crossbows faster? or it was my imagination o.O?

There's a couple ways you can go here.

First, is this for PvP or PvE? Assuming PvE anything can work. Couple of points to keep in mind:

Crossbows are heavy, and don't scale with stats. Normally I use crossbows as a backup to another build. 3 units for a light and 5 or 5.5 for heavy (I can't remember). THey do surprisingly well in terms of damage, but you can't aim them. Crossbows can have lightning ammunition, so either make it a +15 crossbow or +5 lightning and buy lightning bolts (700 souls a shot is expensive though; 2100 for the Avelyn).

For a hunter, bows would be the way to go. Options are:
Pharis. Best range, good damage, but slow rate of fire.
Composite. Best damage, worst range (but if you're mainly shooting, you'll only get a shot in before they close for close combat), fast rate of fire. This is my preferred bow.
Short bow. Fast rate of fire and decent damage and range (and early availability) make this a good bow too. I've heard its great if Crystal +5 but I've never tried it.

Long bow just forget about. It has slightly better damage than the short bow, but it has a slower rate of fire. DOesn't have anything going for it.

Bows assume you're 2handing them, so best damage is a composite at 27str 40dex and an upgrade path of +15.
You can get very good damage with a Chaos Composite bow +5 with fire arrows as well.

With any elemental weapon they get no benefit from scaling, so minimum stats if you're going to go elemental. Dump the rest into Vit/End.

Oh, almost forgot the dragonslayer; this is good for sniping at far range, but isn't good in close combat. Also, shots are 500 souls per shot with the dragonslayer if that matters I think.

If I was doing it, I'd go for a quality build; 27str, 40 dex, rest into vit/end and maybe a tough of pyromancy (2 or 3 att. slots). That feels like a hunter to me. Backup weapons: short/long sword, or a spear.

Also, you can buff a bow, either with resin or any spell. I think powerwithin works as that works with all sources of damage I believe.

So no crystal magic weapon or great magic weapon spells? maybe slb??? and if thats the case... is it worth it to invest 30/40 points on dex/int??

Those spells don't work on bows.

Can you define this a bit more? What level do you want to be? Is this for PvE or PvP?

Without any restrictions, I recommend 99 in every stat and a Crystal Composite Bow +5 with 5 WoG and 5 DMB.

Cap your STR to a minimum. Increase it only to the amount that you need. In this case, cap it at 20 for the requirement of the Dragonslayer GB. With high dex, you can try to play around with pyromancies for extra fire power. You can try to optimize your build for both PvE and PvP. Makes it all the more exciting to build.

Funnily enough I have a Bow build I have been working on with Faith/Dex stats - LVL 120... Prefer Ricards Rapier +15 at close range. I haven't yet hit 120 but my preplanned stats are going to be: Starting class hunter

    VIT 29

    ATT 23

    END 30

    STR 20

    DEX 50

    RES 11

    INT 9

    FAI 30

avelyn has the highest damage but it is split into 3 bolts. this can go for an against you, my advice would be to stick with bows and short swords or rapiers OR daggers if you want some critical ability.

I've got a Quality Pyro who started as a bow build.
It has 28 Str and 45 Dex.

This way my Composite Bow +15 outdamages other bows (even Greatbows, considering it can fire three arrows while Greatbow does only one in the same amount of time) and it fires faster than other bows as well.

With pure Dex, Longbow, and/or Black Bow of Pharis (depending on your Str) should do the most damage, however if you aren't going ot use Pyro, it's a good idea to stop at 40 Dex.

Crossbows suck in general, because you HAVE to load them after each use. Since bows can do headshots and can be manually aimed, they outdamage and outrange crossbows everytime.

Only exceptions is in PvP, to use a crossbow on somebody who is casting a magic, or doing something rather lengthy, and in the beggining of the game, when you don't have enough stats to use bows to their full potential (crossbows don't scale at all),other than that, bows are better.

For melee weapons, I'd recommend anything small and capable of high criticals, so a Rapier, or a Dagger would be best. Personally, I prefer Dark Silver Tracer. But I also use Pyro, so you should carry something better that a dagger or rapier in cases you have to go melee, which you will have to in some cases (PvP aside).

This way, if you offhand a bow and something gets too close, you can quickly backstab and retreat to maintain distance.

If you don't mind farming for some Dragon Scales, join the Dragonbros and get the torso (you need 30 of them, and the best source is to farm the dragons in the VoD. The buff you get for 6 seconds after each roar is excellent (adds something like 30% or more to your damage). At 40 dex with a pharis bow, you can be striking for 400+ damage on each arrow. Although it requires you to be unarmored, you are unbelievable fast with so little gear. And don't underestimate the roar as a defense mechanism. If you get mobbed, it basically acts like a force miracle.

I have a Dragonbro that got to the 3rd rank, and the range of the roar is huge. Using the Lifehunt scythe, I made a two handed strike on the first pus-head in Oolacile Township, after the roar, and got a 1255 strike.
