Smough and Gough Empty Smough and Gough

Post by lalliman Mon Dec 03, 2012 7:02 pm

I have one simple question that's been bothering me ever since encountering the O&S fight.
Smough and Gough... How the f*ck do you pronounce them??
Smog? Smaug? Smoff? I don't think i've ever heard anyone pronounce it in game.
It may be a stupid question for native english speakers, but i'm not one of those :s

haha someone made a thread exactly like this one a while ago, but it had a poll included if I remember.

Our conclusion was that is personal preference. I pronounce it Smog.

I'll try to find that thread

Personally I pronounce them as Smoff and Goff (feels strange typing that big grin).

Ah didn't expect that one. I talked to him several times but never heard him say that :s
I guess such a name is logical for a giant.

Does that mean Smough is also a giant? He's big but not thát big right?

I've been wondering the same thing lol. I've always pronounced it as Smaugh as in "Sm-eau-g" but now that we know how Gough is pronounced I don't know anymore. "Smoff" or "Smah" just sound a bit odd imo but it would make sense Shrug I wish we had official pronunciations for some names.... I'm too particular about these things

Well pronunciation has always been a messed up thing in english. But if you get giants involved it gets even harder apperantly.
Since Gough is Gah i guess Smough should be Smah.... sounds rather weird.

Well in the dlc Gough pronounces his name as Goff so i'm guessing Smough is pronounced Smoff.

I can't hear Gough talk without imagining Andre the Giant. They gave the name Andrei to the wrong NPC. I did wonder if the phonetics applied the same to Smough. Ornstein and Smoff doesn't quite roll off the tongue the way Ornstein and Smo (like Moe, which is how I pronounced it) do. Add it to the scroll of questions we can ask Miyazaki if we ever get the chance.

I've always pronounced it like "Smoge and Goge." Probably not right, but that is how my mind reads it.

I think the one thing we can all agree on is that nothing says high fantasy quite like the names Ornstein and Smough.

^This , I have always pronouced them both this way. I would say this makes the most since. So "Smoe" and "Goe" or "Smo and "Go" or "Smow" and "Gow". You get the point.

That's how I pronounce it also. Although the more aware I become about how many of the names are actually said in game, the more aware I also become at my own propensity to mispronounce them. We should do a thread where we all phonetically spell out how we each individually pronounce some of the names. That'd be funny.

    ^ THIS
Smough and Gough are the names with the most pronunciation issues though. Most names prolly wouldn't have as many different answers.

i go with Smow and Goff <-- the latter because that's how he pronounces it himself.

(of course, there are a million ways to pronounce "ough" in English -- or, actually, seven ways.)

Well names ending in stein aren't originally English, i believe it comes from German, were stein means stone. I think in German stein is pronounced kinda like stayen. (it's hard to morph it into English spelling) So it's prolly Ornstayen.
