    Endurance helps against Capra Demon

Post by Mike-Lassen on Fri Feb 17, 2012 10:23 am

First time fighting the Capra Demon, I had a lot of trouble. Dying again and again until I finally got lucky.

Now I have a new sl 10 toon and this time I decided to leave vitality at default 10 and bump endurance to 16. That made all the difference!

With a kite shield +5 and endurance 16, you can simply block his initial attack, circle around, and walk backwards up the stairs with your hp intact. The dogs won't stop you, if you walk backwards up.

Do not turn your back at the Capra Demon!

meh there's other ways, and capra is supposed to teach you the importance of dodging/rolling but oh well silly

nice though first playthrough if you get yourself a good stability shield then you'll make your life a bit easier in long run.

If you can consistently evade the Capra Demons jumping attack by rolling, then you have very good timing, so kudos to you!

This fight taught me the exact opposite – rolling does not make you invincible anymore.

In Demon's Souls, you could roll through most attacks without taking damage. Not so in Dark Souls.

yeah iv been playing demons recently and the roll is so much nicer to have, it's the 25% roll that you can do without stopping makes it kinda easy silly

and lets be fair you know which attack you have to dodge, the overhead 2H ones.. others block nicely big grin

but honestly rolling is really helpful in DkS, but maybe not as easy as it was in Demons.

Demon's roll was amazing! Super fast, so many invincibility frames, can chain them so fluidly. happy

Dark's roll... is more realistic. Haha makes the game better though, less of a cakewalk.

IMO there shouldnt be any invincibility frames during rolls...

you should dodge by not getting hit and not by rolling while getting hit - but it might be just me

Considering the ridiculous hit box of some weapons they had to make rolls have some sort of invincibility to make it work right. Invincibility or not you still have to time it perfect or you can be hit during the roll, it's not like every frame of animation during a roll is invincible.
About the Capra, I've never tried to block his attacks, only the dogs so I can counter. Your best bet is just to get to the top of the stairs and then either plunge attack the capra from above or jump down as he comes up and catch him as he falls. I managed to kill him and his dogs at level 5 naked, no shield with a plain weapon. Just takes really good timing and knowing the dogs pattern.

No matter if you do ninja flip or fat roll the great scythe AWAYS hit you because of the lag

alternatively if you get the ring of F&P that early it can allow you to block his initial, I've had a hard time timing the roll for his first attack and of course you can't really block it without a good chunk of stamina

they took out the invincibility frames now i don't feel like medium or heavy roll are of any way reliable to dodge since i get hit either way due to stupid hitboxes

on demon souls you could evade EVEN with the heavy roll of course it was harder but that you could you could now in this game you can't its like they're saying that if you have heavy or medium armor you will need to block smough's attacks specially his rushing move (which has a stupid as hell of a hitbox)

for me they made rolling useless by taking out the invincibility frames (admit it people, whoever of you played demon's souls knew that if you did not had invincibility frames you'd be dead either way)

about hitboxes let me get you an example

*taurus demon does his sweeping attack*
*i roll backwards to evade it*
*he does it and it doesn't hit me at all but...*
*gets hit by it anyways even knowing it clearly did not hit me*

    >:|

    same goes for smough

    *he does his rushing attack*
*i strafe and roll to the side in order to evade*
*i get hit while he is rushing and i get hit again when he tries to throw you into the air*
    *dies*

O_O... "that did not just happen"

    yeah...me wants invincibility frames back

There are still invincibility frames but the trick is the timing of when a given attack actually hits and knowing exactly what part of the roll is invincible. Some attacks hit right at the beginning of their animation, some hit towards the end and some have a long hit time that you can't always roll through. Gywn's long distance thrust for example, I can never successfully roll away/towards it as it hits me at the end of my rolls invincibility. Things like arrows, soul spear, WoG can all be rolled directly through them as their hit animation only last a few frames. Longer spells or weapon animations can still hit you because even if you time it and are invincible during the first part, as soon as your roll ends you basically "stand up" while the spell or attack is still "live".

Not sure if that made any sense.. happy

Yeah, I definitely get hit quite often when I shouldn't.

But hey, we have to realize how amazing Dark Souls's hit boxes are anyways. Compare to any other game and it looks like the others are a full generation behind. Go look at videos of Dragon's Dogma, or Kingdoms of Amalur... Dark Souls is incredible!
