Detail in the catacombs Empty Detail in the catacombs

Post by starazer Sat Nov 24, 2012 2:15 am

I just realized this interesting fact.

if you go to the first bonfire in the caverns you see what appear to be rocks everywhere on the walls.
if you take a close look you can see that they are slugs or larva or soething like that slithering across the walls.
And there are whole arounf the room where you can see the bugs entering and leaving the room

I get the impression they're corpse eating insects. You are entering an area that's pretty much one giant crypt.

They seem to be carrion beetles, and tons of them.

Well I always figured they are scarabs, which fit well I feel. They feed upon the waste and left overs of others, and of course the relation to an Egyptian Sun God, god of the rising sun. He is a part of their creation myth and is depicted on their tombs and catacombs if I remember correctly, on their walls.

You know that wall which lowers when you push the lever there? That wall has English letters on it.

I'll take it, as long as it's soft and warm.

That was pretty weak. Praise the sun?

Actually, this has been raised before and the general concensus then was that the creatures were woodlice, which, if my memory serves me correctly, are arthropods, not true insects at all. They inhabit damp dark places. The beetle which the Egyptians based the scarab on are in fact dung beetles and are common in Africa. They roll up the droppings of large mammals like elephants into a ball between their front legs, so they are surface dwellers as far as I know.

They act similar to Scarabs of fiction, while the real creatures are just little insects often they are depicted in fiction among the dead and eating flesh. Covering surfaces rapidly and crawling up walls and about in caves.

You are right in that realistically they don't, but in fiction there are similarities.

I do wish I had a working copy though so I could examine them again closely.

    At OP-

I never noticed them either until I had headphones on one day. I kept wandering what the hell that disgusting noise was and then I noticed the walls were moving. Yuck.

They move quite slow compared to how fictional scarabs would move which is why I pegged them as something different, plus they lack the longer legs and mandibles.

This is a shot of carrion beetles on a dead turtle but in game things look like they could be arthropods as well:

The ones in game definitely have a bit of a bulbous shape to them. This photo is pretty accurate IMO

Can you imagine some sort of summit where the Forum gets to ask From one question and have it answered? I think what types of insects those are, should be our question. It would throw them off definitely.
