Anyone ever two-hand a shield?
I was looking at options for low level builds, and most of the time having 12 strength is good for shields. But I was wondering if using two hands on a shield lowers the str requirement the same way it does for swords? My thought was that I might be able to do this and tank up in a few select spots like the ToG, and just release my right hand to either swing a sword or cast pyro, then double up on the shield again.

Re: Anyone ever two-hand a shield?
Haven't tried it myself, but the DkS Character Planner claims so. Havel's Greatshield only requires 34 strength when two-handed, for instance.

Re: Anyone ever two-hand a shield?
I've done it a few times just screwing around. It certainly throws off invaders who like to parry. It's kinda fun to dual wield shields for that reason too. Maybe a grass crest on your back and a Great Shield or Thorn Shield as a weapon.

Re: Anyone ever two-hand a shield?
I may have to try this. Some spots are just so brutal without a good shield, but not enough that I feel I need extra points in strength. Was thinking I could let a skelly hit my shield first, then give him a face full of fireball.

Re: Anyone ever two-hand a shield?
I'm pretty sure if you're two handing the shield you can't block with it though. The R1 just becomes a shield bash and the R2 generally becomes a stronger one.

Re: Anyone ever two-hand a shield?
if you twohand a shield the L1 button is block just as if you had the shield in your off hand, you cannot parry with a two handed shield, shields also get a bonus to stability when twohanded, the pierce and spiked shields are designed to be attack shields and when you attack with them you can block attcks if you time things right, making the pierce shield an awesome leo ring weapon as it removes the "trading blows" issue of the leo ring fighting style.

Re: Anyone ever two-hand a shield?
Thorn and Pierce shields are both viably damaging weapons should you have the right scaling stats and +15 them. The Thorn Shield is actually stronger than the Barbed sword at 40/40.

Re: Anyone ever two-hand a shield?
There's also L1 and L2 when two handing, one should be block.
Two handing a shield will add the 50% strength bonus, so you can wield it without meeting the str requirements afaik. Blocking while two handing should also affect the stamina consumption, as in less stamina depleted.

Re: Anyone ever two-hand a shield?
Sparkly and ublug are both correct.
It can actually come in handy from time to time. When I was going through the DLC the first time and got to Kalameet's area, he kept killing me with his constant fire-breathing fly-bys. I tried blocking with my Heater +15, but he'd eventually break my guard and fry me. Then I equipped the Heater in my right hand and 2-handed it, and I could tank his breath no problem.
Also, @plastic: shield attacks can be parried too! Be careful using them. If you really want to annoy parry spammers, whip them!

Oh right. Derp. What am I thinking?
Yeah I generally carry around an upgraded Notched Whip for that very reason. I'm thinking about trying the Guardian Tail now though.

I don't want to get too far off topic but since we are discussing shields here...

I've never tried it, but I can't see why you wouldn't be able to if you were carrying it in your weapon hand

Anyone want to confirm? This could lead to some very interesting builds...

Re: Anyone ever two-hand a shield?
I think I have a build with both and I'm playing right now. Give me a couple minutes.
Nope. Can't do it. I just tried the Pierce Shield, Thorn Shield, and Bonewheel. None work. That's kind of a shame. I don't know that I ever would have done it for practical reasons anyway, but it still would have been kinda fun to be able to do.

Half the battle maybe, but not a battle with an enchanted shield of glowing awesome.
All a shark wants is a lemon buffed shield but he can't even have that. Then people wonder why we eat their kids...

Re: Anyone ever two-hand a shield?
I also tried magic shield on a left handed sword a while back, and I believe that worked, can someone confirm? Not sure if there are any benefits though, don't think it did anything to the damage, but it might do something with guard/poise-break, also the gold tracer comes to mind.

Re: Anyone ever two-hand a shield?
When I 2-hand a greatshield and then do the R2 strong attack, it actually slams the shield flat face-down onto the ground, as opposed to the usual shield bash animation. Anyone know if this causes a knockdown or anything? I'm so bad with these things I haven't actually landed it on anybody.
p.s. leap attacks with a greatshield are also hilarious

Re: Anyone ever two-hand a shield?
I fool around using the Pierce shield as a weapon(2h/1h) as my main. I actually get quite a few kills, it does good damage with my dex build. It even has WD/WR attacks, that are fairly effective.

@ Back Lot Basher- I've tried a two-handed Spiked Shield run before, but gave up after the Capra Demon handed my butt back to me!

Bummer. I did mess around with this, carrying a Tower Shield and a Black Iron Greatshield. Aside from the fact that I looked a bit like Darth Vader's Tie Fighter, it was a blast blocking and slamming. The suggestion to use a Green Crest in the left, and a bashing shield in the right was pretty awesome. Now I understand the point of making shields elemental.

Re: Anyone ever two-hand a shield?
Co-op'd yesterday with a fellow phantom who was dual-wielding Balder Shields. Looked like if he flapped his arms he'd have taken off. He was doing 8 damage on the bloated head guys. I got dc'd before we got to Manus unfortunately (pc).
Anyway, some fun ideas here. I might try some of them out.
