Post by Hatsune Miku Sat Nov 17, 2012 2:30 pm

I'm not sure where to start. But guess I'll start by asking a few questions.

    1. What the highest Soul Level I should go for a beginning veteran?

    2. I tend to lean more towards dex than str. What weapons do y'all suggest me use?

    3. Any other tips, will be much appretiated.

This is not for PvP. Although I might get into PvP later. But for right now, it's PvE.

Im not entirely sure what you mean by veteran, but I generally stick to SL120. It's a nice SL for staying in range for a lot of multiplayer experiences, including pvp and co-op, and its a nice round level to have a pretty focused build, having some high stats, yet having to limit yourself in some way. It also seems like stat increases really start to drop off around then anyway.

If you explain what you mean a little more I could try to recommend some weapons too. I tend to favor Dex also, so I've got a decent amount of experience with those weapons. Just for starters I'd recommend trying the pole arms if you haven't already. I really enjoy the curved swords also. The Shotel and Gold Tracer and both favorites of mine. I also really like the Estoc and Velka's Rapier.

I guess this means you basically want to master Dark Souls, right? If that's the case, and you aren't concerned with PvP on your main character, I'd suggest making it a much higher sl, 200 maybe, in order to take advantage of (and learn) most everything the game has. 200 will remain viable for the Arena if you ever get into PvP.

Raising your dex AND your strength will open up a lot of amazing quality and boss weapons. It'll suck if you get a cool weapon drop and find out you won't have the stats to even try it out.

I'd suggest probably getting Faith up next, especially if you're planning on continuing far into the NG+'s. A strong Divine weapon or two will help out, and an Occult Rapier has about the best critical damage in the game, excepting buffs. I'd even get Intelligence up to at least 15 so you can mess around with some of the entertaining (and useful) spells like Hidden Body. You'll want a few attunement slots so you can experiment with buffs and stuff too.

Most of the advice on the forum will be PvP-influenced, no matter how many times you shout
    "PVE!!!" Bear that in mind.

You don't really decide to become a veteran, it just kind of happens over time silly

As Plastic said though, to get the most multiplayer experiences under your belt it's best to stop your builds at SL 120. This SL also helps you on the way to becoming a better player because it forces you to effectively maximize what you put points into, so the better you understand the game the better your build will be.

Stopping at a certain sl has zero effect on making you a better player. My main character is 457, and another is 6, both are at NG+infinity. What makes you a better player is simply experience.

Well experience certainly is a big part of it, but I think you'd be hard pressed to dispute that learning how to get the most out of your SL points is important.

When you can give a step by step walkthrough off the top of your head, only verbally, you're a veteran, IMHO.

P V E! Efficiency isn't all that important in PvE.

Even for PvP I think the 'perfect build' is highly overrated. As long as you don't make a complete disaster of it, 9 times out of 10 the better player is going to win. I think going for perfect builds is fun, but it isn't necessary most of the time.

I'm not necessarily talking about min/maxing, I'm talking about learning which kinds of builds suit you as a player. I think both experience and making the most out of your SL points is important for that. ....But I guess we have to have a pissing contest about it like everything else

I agree with that, I'm just the type who likes to have a quality main character so I can learn what kind of more efficient builds I can do later. I like being able to switch to any weapon on my main guy and play a while and think, 'this weapon is cool, I should do a build around it.'

Then again, I realize I'm in the minority on this forum. Most of my PvP comes while playing through the game, I don't go to a spot to specifically PvP nearly as often as most of you (so take that into consideration, op).

I had done a few challenge runs and thought that I was pretty good, but I never really felt like I had mastered DKS until I put a character through NG+++ and went to a high level (like 200). After that, I felt like I had pretty much mastered DKS, PVE anyways. There is something that you learn from going through multiple playthroughs and getting to a high level that you can't from staying low level.

Of course, a low level run does teach you the importance of gear upgrades and skill, and patience, and prior planning, and a bunch of other important points, but going up to a high level teaches you about other important things as well. I'm not exactly sure what, but it does.

ADDITION- The above post helps me make my point. Having a high level, multiple playthrough build helps you learn about all the little nuances of the game, and allows for more knowledgeable experimentations later. Same stuff you can learn on the wiki, but when you have done it yourself the knowledge sticks.

Well I have a super high SL build as well. I did it because I didn't want to delete my first toon, whose stats I completely butchered while learning the game for the first time. So once I did learn the game I just kept leveling him to salvage the toon. I think it's important to do that at least once and get every item there is to get. If for no other reason than to have a kind of 'go-to' toon you can use to familiarize yourself with any weapon or spell you want to. That's what I use mine for anyway.

It depends on the kind of player you are. If you favour going toe to toe with enemies and bosses, then it makes sense to up your strength stat so that you can use heavier weapons and armour, like Havel's but if, like me you tend to favour more long range and sneakier game play, then a bow is essential and in fact it is very useful with any build. I couldn't do without my Composite Bow. Also I like Katanas like the Uchigatana and Iaito which are very fast and light. I've also just discovered the Gold Tracer which I love, again this is a light weapon. My first toon is a bit of an allsort because like Plastic the first time through I didn't know what to go for. You'll discover what suits you best through playing though, it's the only way.

To answer your question Plastic; I mean, a veteran build as in a low level build for beating the game in a challenging way. Not saying go throwing fists. But more effeciant stratagy.

Example: I want to beat the Four Kings boss at soul level 60 instead of 70; with light armor, instead of mediem, or heavy armor.

And I don't want to rush things anymore. As well as I want to take advantage of enemies attacks and so on.

I'm sure some of that comes with practice and time. But are there any suggestions to help me become a better player?

BTW, I've got two builds that are in the 100's. One is sl 155; the other is sl 120.

oooooohhh. So we all kinda misinterpreted what you were asking. You know who you should ask? PM Green Eagle. He does this stuff all the time. I'm still yet to do a real low SL challenge build. I did a naked club and plank shield SL50 run but I'm yet to do anything below that. I've heard if you're going to pyromancer is probably the best starting class, because you get so much good stuff starting out and don't have to level much to wield decent weapons and shields.

Solely from my personal experience I'd recommend a sorcery build. You can get high enough INT to cast spells like SS and still have enough to END and VIT to be functional. You can also use weapons like the tracer in combination with a secondary Priscilla's Dagger, so you can fill the bleed gauge with the Tracer then switch and land the finishing blow with Priscilla's to get massive bleed. That's a nice trick for a lower level DEX build.

Doing the challenges themselves will teach you the things you need to know. Patience is probably the single most important thing. Learn to NEVER take that extra swing if you're not 100% sure that it will land AND 100% sure that it won't leave you open whether it connects or not.

Dodging as opposed to blocking is also huge. One thing that will help you is doing a playthrough without a shield. Once you get used to dodging things instead of blocking you'll be able to start doing challenges against bosses like the 4 Kings. Once you get used to dodging everything you don't have to worry about your defense (which becomes irrelevant anyway for most challenges, at least in NG+ and beyond).

You can use the Red Tearstone Ring and Power Within for challenge runs, but I advise against it. Save it in case you ever get stuck to the point you can't progress anymore, then give those a shot. I hit that wall with the NG+5 Kings on my challenge character, but I put on the Red Tearstone Ring and made it through.

Well, I still don't really know what a "veteran" PvEer is, but this guy had some interesting ideas on how to make the single player experience more personal.
