I've got a SL 160 faith build that relies on sunlight spears, divine and occult claymore/bastard swords, and an occassional WOG. Up until now it has been for PVE, but I've been getting invaded a lot on NG+++ and have actually been doing well.
The sunlight spear is ridiculously powerful, so much so that every person I have struck with one was either killed or nearly killed and knocked to the ground, allowing a quick and easy follow up to finish. The key is overcoming the slow build up. Two ways I use it is when the enemy has retreated to heal, cast a long spell, or pyromancy. Most the time the spells and pyromancy are quicker than the sunlight spear so you have to be able to kind of judge what they are going to try to do based on their past actions.
The most effective way to get that oh-so satisfying spear skewer is to lure the enemy into a narrow corridor with ample space between you and them. In Sens Fortress and Anor Londo there are many places to make this happen. Just today I killed four invaders with the sunlight spear by getting them to chase me into a hallway and then chuckin Zeus at them. If you are low on health it is easy to bait them this way, because they think you are going to heal. If you can get behind a corner and charge the bolt, then pop out and lock on right as it is ready. Even if they block it it will still do a good amount of damage and stagger them, allowing you to either charge to follow up or get more space.
The way I am using WOG is like this:
I use it early in the fight against an aggressive heavy weapon user, just once since it normally takes half their health. I use it if they are trying to spam attack me (since I have a light build) or have me stuck on some precarious spot where I could fall or something. Once you use it once, everytime after that you pull out the talisman they go fleeing away. It's perfect for when you need some breathing room.
Also, a lot of invaders use that spell that makes them a pot and hide and then backstab you. I always WOG those guys (still, only once!) so that we are both starting the real fight with even health.
I've used it quite a bit like this and nobody has sent me any hate mail. In fact, the only hate mail I got was from a guy that I speared, he complained that it was laggy and it actually missed him. I'm sure on his side it did appear that way, but on mine it was a beautiful homerun. He reinvaded again and I got him with the same trick, ha!
