Anyone else care to voice some thoughts about this series?

Do we know anythign about the supposed film and tv series adaptations?

And remember no spoilers or I shall hunt you like Roland hunted the Man in Black....

Greatest book series I have ever read. Read it three times now and it has gotten better each time.

I thought about picking these up once, but I read in a couple different places that the end was really a let down. I'm not even really sure what that means though because I'm not even sure what they're about. Maybe I'll just do it. He's never let me down before.

What Emergence said. Even the read it three times part. Plastic, it was literally the only ending I could think of that I would be satisfied with. I see why some don't like it but to me it's perfect. The journey there is well worth it too

I saw why people were dissatisfied but like you said Skare, it's the getting there that is fun. This is really King's masterwork, and the reason he wrote at all. You really get a sense of the man behind the stories and what makes him tick.

That's a pretty bold statement. I think I may have to pick it up now. I've read quite a few King novels now, umm I read Bag of Bones, Insomnia, The Tommyknockers, The Langoliers, Cell, Dolores Claiborne, The Green Mile, and the Shining; and I think my favorite so far is Bag of Bones. Really captured so much that's unique to human experience. Some of it is scary as hell too. I don't know if anyone here has read it but I found the scene where the main character makes a new friend in his basement to be pretty chilling.

I also highly recommend Cell to all you zombie fans. It's not quite a zombie novel, but it's the closest thing I've read to a King approach to zombies. I thoroughly enjoyed it too.

I loved the ending... but I was 14--not quite a literary critic back then! I'm thinking about reading it again, see if my impressions changed. I loved most of the journey, the only thing I didn't really like is the uneven pace. Without spoiling anything: some books are short and events move at a rapid pace, others get bogged down in seemingly unimportant locations for interminable lengths... I understand that the series was written over such a great time-span that the author's style changed, but it still annoyed me.

    Also:

    pertaining to thew second book:

    Favorite quotes:

    - "The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed." Best opening line to a novel, ever!

    - "[...] even the dead would run from Blaine, if they could." twisted

    My favourite was

    "

“The Universe is the Great All, and offers a paradox to great for the finite mind to grasp. As the living brain cannot concieve of a non living brain- although it may think it can- the finite mind cannot grasp the infinite.

The prosaic fact of the universe's existance alone defeats both the pragmatist and the romantic .”

Plastic, Bag of Bones and Cell were both awesome. Without giving anything away either, regarding the list you made of books: you might not realize it.....but you've already started the series twisted

You'll understand once you've started the ones actually titled The Dark Tower

Awesome series. Favorite books by my favorite author. I couldn't get enough of them. And, to think, Stephen King almost didn't finish them.

Used books are fine but if you end up at a used car dealership instead I advise against any purchase of a Plymouth Fury.

Buick 8 is probably out too.

edit: My daycare provider's husband has a Buick 8 for sale. I kinda want it

The last used car I bought was a Toyota Turcel, and on my way home from buying it the drivers side door fell off of the car on the highway. I had to drive back and get it and then drive home with it in the back seat. Cant get much worse than that.

If you haven't yet read Christine or From a Buick 8.

    Things could get much worse.

Since we live in the real world though you're right. That's the worst used car story I've ever heard. Seriously, wtf

Yeah I never read Christine, just saw the movie, ages ago to boot. The reference was right over my head. I bought it off ebay from a family of mechanics that I'm pretty convinced did everything they could to make it look perfect for a couple of hours, but not last much longer than that. I took it for a test drive when I got there and everything was cool. Wasn't until I started to get close to home that I realized the gas gauge didn't work and then things started falling off. Thankfully it didn't go out of it's way to try to kill me, only kind of indirectly.

In all seriousness it wasn't a terrible car. I only spent $500 on it and I drove it for just over 4 years. So I can't be that unhappy about it.
