Would you like it more, or would it be too brutal? I've often thought that this might have been an interesting twist on NG+...having enemies spawn randomly in places. Might be too much for first time runs, but it would sure be a different experience after you'd beaten the game and done a lot of your farming.

How different would DkS be with randomly spawned enemies?

I think it would be a nice change. You would always have to be careful at every corner. It would bring back that feeling of not knowing what comes next. However, farming would become a pain in the ***.

i think i would prefer having some sort of wandering monsters rather than random spawns.

I would say that there'd be a safe range of mobs rather than truly random. For instance, there's always say, between 5 and 8 hollow soldiers in a given area. However, if you had fixed spawn locations, while it would take longer, you'd still only need to memorize spawn points. So Nybbles has a good addition. Those 5 to 8 soldiers would have to have some wanderers I think.

I'd prefer wandering monsters as well; eeventually everyone would know the potential spawn points, but you'd still have to be on your toes. This would be in addition to the set encounters, which have a nice setup for the game (firebombers in undead burg for example; that would'nt happen randomly).

So, would these be something that would walk a regular route, like patrols in stealth games, or just take random routes?

patrols would seem to fit the play style of the game more, but having a monster that could actively stalk you would be better, it not harder to implement.
edit: come to think of it, the squid heads in Latria had a patrol they would follow, i wonder why dark souls doesn't have patrolling baddies?

I think you misspelled especially mimics
It would fit really well if certain enemies just wandered a little this way or that way however at the same time I like the idea of undead hollows being so far gone that they do nothing at all but stand there motionless until something moves like they have no purpose anymore.
That being said I feel there should have been black knights who wander across levels especially since their lore as lost spirits. Certain non respawning enemies could patrol or stalk the area, and some powerful enemies would respawn every few bonfires, like it takes more for them to res-erect because they're tougher.

I believe actually that in the Design Works Arbook interviews, they talked about how at first they had planned on having the Black Knights actually randomly walking around with no actual set point of where they spawned but they scrapped it for some reason.
If they did have random walking enemies, it would have to be certain enemies and not all of them.

i love the idea of random spawns and especially wandering enemies, i actually thought darksouls was going to have that when the first trailers came out, I was picturing a larger more open world....something like dragons dogma i guess.... i feel that it could be pulled off and be amazing if a combination of more open terrain along with the linear portions/dungeons was in the next game, and there were wandering enemies, I love in MMOs I guess legendary? enemies spawned, are rarer and harder to beat....this for mini bosses in a souls game could be amazing....

Patrolling enemies could have made for some excellent uses for the Oolacile magic (Hide Body, Chameleon). Imagine having to sneak past some of the, so as to avoid getting mobbed?
Someone mentioned the Latria denizens in DS...I remember trying to climb that tower, and having to time your approach just right so you could get them on the ascent. And how about black WT? Wasn't one of them a black phantom?
