    Does dark souls really take much skill?

    Post by Kiva the wanderer on Sun Nov 04, 2012 8:33 am

    I've been asking this since my first invasin where the people I invaded were gankers. Even to now I went from being a houswife build to a skill oriented build however that's the problem the vast majority of players let their builds do the work for them or make use of the worst latency to backstab other players to oblivion, take a look at a game like Counter strike or the halo franchise, these games don't just demand you to be individually a good player but they also deman good team skill to be succesfull I've seen very little skill demanded from dark souls, players will abuse backstabs, weapon buffs and even ganking to win a few games but in games like Halo and CS everyone will have the same or at least an extremely similar advantage but in dark souls its perfectly within the games rules to be outright over powered. I'm not by any means a "bad" dark souls player my buiild is designed to not make use of the what is considered to be unfair methods or abilities within the game. Well discuss bear in mind that I'm talking about PvP in general.

    Yes, Dark Souls really take that much skill. Maybe you didn't know, but we got plenty of members here who massacre gankers on daily basis also punishing fisher all year long. It's not pure luck that they succeed.

    And you can't really compare DkS with FPS games. It's not the same type of skill.

    So by this statement you understand that there must be good and bad players. That's differing levels of skill man happy

    Also, I don't really see what you mean by "let their builds do the work for them". That just bends my brain man, my +5 lightning avelyn doesn't shoot people for me.

    I'm just echoing what ENB said and this game really doesn't take that much skill sure their is good and bad players but as I said the game takes A LITTLE skill, and a bad player can easily kill a good player through lag, luck and the sheer inconsistency of the games mechanics.

    Indeed, but to be fair - every souls game will have "Terrible" PvP mechanics. The pvp in this game is not to be taken seriously is what he said as you cannot make it competitive. The Netcode is too... simple.

    That's pretty much it, bu t its also just the fact that the online community is one of the worst gaming communitys around almost as bad as CoDs community, unorgannised PvP is a pain in the flank. Also I can't tell if your being sarcastic alundil but if you see a TWoPing WoTG build you can't do anything about it and the game sorta plauys itself from there same pre patch with hornet ring BS fish builds, same thing with post patch BS fishers and lagstabs and the fact I can get one shot by a ddark bead within mellee range, i s any real skill taken in these things? Believe it or not but a lot of the people I encounter do these things.

    @Amos Lol possibly man, possibly,

    @OP there's an aspect you're not thinking about, or maybe you are but you think of it differently or whatever but I mean there's a lot of people who quit out of dark souls at all different parts through the game. If there were only people who picked it up, played for an hour or two then never played again then this point wouldn't be valid but there are people who really try and beat the game and end up ragequitting at Seath or the BoC or whatever.

    I'm trying to say that this shows there are differing levels of skill involved, so different people have a different amount of understanding of how to carry out the actions to get success in Dark Souls. Isn't that skill?

    Roll into the TWoP BS: TWoP = gone.

    or alternatively run away for 10 seconds and you don't even take any risks

    Shrug

    I know I used affronted conjunction (bad grammar but oh well)

    Alundil PvE skill ist ENTIRELY differnet from PvP skill I would consider the PvE more consistent than the PvP because seath can't lag stab me and the methods used don't dictate skill just look at how people use to handle ceaseless discharge and how you can exploit the game to easily beat Sif its similar to PvP. In that regard but people on this game tend to use the easiest method to try and win theire games, I wouldn't be having this rant iof latency wasn't an issue n this game or. Even if absolutely no one lagstabbed or completely relied on houswife builds. The community is what's wrong with dark souls. (I'm not talking about trolls who invade and killl the host in a funky way I'm talking about gank squads and the like)

    Ganks - go to the forest sir, you will go in as a boy and come out as a man.

    Ganks are piss easy to fight. Go to the For the Glory of Alvina thread: we will hook you up with some tactics on how to fight gankers.

    I think it is the build that every one in the top 10 for the SL100-200 arena is using. Maybe some variation - but that would be the best variant of it. :dung:

    Kiva - yesterday I played two people in the arena: One with 60 dark bead castings. The other had 16 Black Flames and 16 Great Combustions. You just have to be confident and you will beat them - lacking confidence will leave you lacking in ability as you will be convinced that you cannot roll dodge the Dark Beads or GC's then when they come in for the HR BS you counter BS them etc;

    @amos After months of hunting I understand why you say you're not as good in duels(which you are you liar) the thing is most strategies don't work on a 1v1. It's so fun though, I have been doing nothing but hunt all these pas months.

    I tend to get angered when the lag kills me, ever face a laggy dark bead? ITS HORROR ON WHEELS! Also wwhat makes you think. I have a problem in the first place ? This rant isn't based off of me losing its based on what I've seen during my travel through lordran and the things I've seen in this game......... when I catch fire I go absolutely God mode on people then I get ****-blocked by a laggy BS fisher.... and or dark mages I don't lose the majority of my games I win and lose equally but my worst defeats are at the hands of these exploited mechanics..

    I'm not saying there isn't skilled people out there but what I'm saying is you don't need skill to win a lot you can get a build set up to do that for you.

    Hmm... Yes, you can kill a lot of people by spamming wog, or great combustion or fishing backstabs or whatever. But only players who don't know how to counter these tactics. Spells can be dodged, backstabs can be countered in various ways etc. There is counter to every tactic. Lag is rarely so bad, that you can't do anything.

    certain tatics require no skill to win. for example abusing WoG/TWOP/new dark magic/ Pyro. to counter those tatics require some skill unless you use GMB.

    Backstabing and counter backstabbing to me requires no skill, its just to easy and simple to do. sure you have to learn how to do counter it.. but once you learn it it is easy to do as opening a car door.

    Can I ask why pyro is stacked next to WoG and TWoP? :|
