Got my strength up to 50 so I could tote Havel's Shield. Figured it could come in handy against Artorias. Anyway decided to try it out on the mobs near Firelink and practice parrying.

Ooer.... pressed R2 and suddenly I'm turned into a 'rock monster', couldn't move and a message popped up saying 'WEAPON BROKE' or some such. I was dumbstruck, just stared at the screen and got killed.

I didn't know Havel's Shield did that. This game just keeps on and on being amazing.

First time using Greatshields or something? You can't parry with Greatshields at all, the strongest Greatshield in terms of stability is Artorias' and Havel's special grants you unlimited poise on top of turning you into a portable wall (weapons will bounce off you).

Well that's news about Greatshields. Havel's is the first. I usually stick to lighter gear.

I heard a rumor awhile ago that Havel's GS's special will auto-parry lighter weapons. Honestly I thought it seemed unlikely enough that I never tried it out, but that's what I've heard anyway. The shield itself is awesome anyway. I have a dragon build that makes use of it and pretty much my only worry is bleed. If you have high enough endurance it essentially makes all PvE a joke. I fought Kalameet with it for the first time for like 2 and a half hours trying to figure out how to take off his tail with a spear, and after all that time I still had almost all of my estus left. He just wasn't able to damage me through it at all.

The auto parry is probably just a misconception about how light weapons reflect off of heavy shields giving an almost staggered animation.

Seignar I thought that was only in earlier patched of the game does it still happen? ~ never made a build with 50 str lol!

I think Kalameet actually has a break point around 70 stability where none of his physical attacks will guard break, went a half hour blocking him on ng+ with a crystal balder +4.
