Re: collage in America
The simplest way to explain it, is that what you learn at college in America is not as important as your degree. For certain careers and certain people everything they learn there will be absolutely vital for their line of work.
But for most people it is just getting a degree so that you can prove that you are educated.

If your going into a trade career ex: Computer Programing then it is vital, but like said above it is only to show that you are educated. It is also a very good way to get educated in the things you will need to do later on in your career for a head start.

I would take it one step further. It shows you are educated, yes, but it also shows you are capable of being further educated (job training) and that you posess a certain level of drive to achieve goals. Not that you cannot posess these traits without a degree, but it is a clear indicator.
Society in the US has shifted closer to college being a required step for the majority of jobs, similar to the level of importance high school held many years ago (not that high school is any less important today).

Re: collage in America
College degree on your resume also shows that you're capable of original thought and critical thinking, both of which are things a lot of employers like to see. College is what you make of it though, not just in America, but everywhere. If you go to school just to get your degree that's all your going to get, but if you go to try to learn things and improve yourself then it's a wonderful encouraging place to do that.
