    So...how does, from a realistic point of view, attunement work? Like, you just swap spells and suddenly your character just FORGOT how to work a spell some random guy just taught him?

    How does finding spells even work? You just loot a corpse and suddenly our character knows EXACTLY how to work magic! Amazing!

    Maybe it's like scrolls in the Elder Scrolls games.

    The spells in this game are situated on scrolls. You can see em right in your inventory behind each spell icon. I got the impression that when you cast spells you're somehow casting them from the scrolls, as opposed to memorizing them, and the attunement slots are like scroll inventory slots.

    Judging from the 'amazing (insert spell type here) scroll' thing in the Orange Stone menu, yes. They're scrolls that you read to learn how to work it.

    But...the magic comes from either a catalyst, a talisman or your hand. So, maybe we just engrave symbols on our weapons to make the magic work?

    I can imagine the trouble people with 10 ATT slots have writing and erasing those markings every single time they want to change.

    I'm not sure. In a world entirely based in logic this all makes perfect sense, but it's a video game. For some things you just have to suspend disbelief

    The catalyst is exactly that, a catalyst, it is not actually magic, it only allows it to manifest.

    For the part about "forgetting" spells all if a sudden when swapping them out, I'd guess attunement slots deal with your ability to "contain" different spells in your body/mind/soul. Whatever floats your boat.

    Attunement, in my opinion, goes hand in hand with intelligence. Master sorcerers' skills aren't measured by how effective their spells are, but also how many dIfferent spells they can throw out on the fly without preparing to do so.

    But all jokes aside, I don't think that it's memory based. Think of it as a sort of incantation that you whisper and your catalyst is like, "AWWW **** BETTER CAST NOW!"

    any way the way i see attunement is this: spell scrolls have their own magic that burns how to cast their spell into your memory, people only have so much capacity for this, that is attunement. hence how you can find spells in chests or on corpses and equip them the next time you can meditate (bonfire), miracles on the other hand are bits of scripture memorized by the caster with such extreme furvor that all else is removed (the only way i can see faith affecting the physical world is with a fanatical devotion behind it.) pyromancy on the other hand is more similar to sorcery...

    The definition of attuning is to "become receptive to or aware of" something. Magic, regardless of school, is dangerous and fickle. Without proper meditation and preparation in advance, failure to cast a spell or even miscasting becomes possible. Many an impatient Vinheim apprentice have learned what failing to prepare a spell beforehand means, but few have been in any state to tell the tale afterwards.

    By opening up the proper pathways within one's mind, body and soul, a caster can cast spells without fear of lasting scars, mental or physical. The amount of pathways that can be opened - made receptive to the magical energies involved - are limited to the individual skill and wisdom of the caster in question. A Vinheim apprentice cannot expect to be able to attune his body and mind to allow the casting of more spells than his basic Soul Arrow, while a master wizard, with thousands of spiritual pathways mapped and carefully studied, can subject his foes to a vast and varied array of magical might. The more of these pathways a sorcerer can keep open and in harmony, the more spells he can cast.

    The power of miracles are granted by divine forces, concious ones or not. The spell scrolls utilized by clerics are not spell scrolls as much as the prayers and rites necessary to access the divine power in question. Miracles are granted, not learned, and a cleric's capacity for channelling these miracles are limited. Even the most fanatic follower of a god cannot expect to be able to channel their power if their bodies are not trained to receive it. Those who have tried tend to suffer seizures, and sometimes even start talking in tongues. Some just become comatose.

    Last, but not least, we have the Pyromancer. Pyromancy is similar in many ways to sorcery, yet also very different. A Pyromancer channels his inner flame rather than the power of his soul, and the attuning process reflects this. Attunement for a Pyromancer represents how much power he can exert over his inner flame. Pyromancy scrolls describe *how* to make the flame act in a certain way, but not the process of controlling the flame to act a certain way. A set of instructions are useless if you are incapable of using the tools described within.
