The most out of your magic....

Post by Heroez Blade on Fri Nov 02, 2012 12:53 pm

Many of you probably know this already, but I still want to help people get the most out of their magic.

If you ever find yourself running out of spells too easily than i have some really helpful tips. 1st you want to use the izalith catalyst, which has pretty high magic adjust and it doesnt half your spells like the crystal catalyst.

2nd you want to make sure you have medium - high attunement slots so you can add multiples of the same spell.

3rd you want to equip the Dusk Crown Ring which grants you more castings, but halves your HP, so you need to be a little more careful.

That will grant you the most castings. If you want extra power than just equip the magic boosting ring and the dusk crown helmet.

With this method and the spells and stats that I have I can use 45 crystal soul masses and 75 homing soul masses. There is no way i will run out.

I would not suggest using this for pvp, but it will really help in bos fights. I hope you enjoyed these tips.

PS: If this needs to be moved to a new topic than please move it........

Izalith Catalyst is the same mag adjust as the staring wand (which you can get from Rickert), and weighs one less, and its much easier to get.

Catalyst choice all depends on how much intelligence you have too. Depending on your INT stats there are definitely better choices. Refer here: http://darksoulswiki.wikispaces.com/Magic+Adjustment

Edit: Not to say there's anything wrong with the Izalith Catalyst, because there's not. It just depends on your stats.

Well other than the catalyst, what about the actual method and the amount of spells you can have?

You're right on the money about that. If you want the most castings possible the dusk crown ring, a catalyst other than the TCC, and high attunement is the way to go. You can also do a combo like the TCC and the dusk crown ring to get the normal amount of spells but with higher power. I generally stay away from the TCC though. The couple sorcery builds I've made I've pumped enough INT into to make use of WDB, and at that INT I think you get the most damage output out of Logan's Catalyst. I've also been hearing some interesting things about the Manus Catalyst. Wyrmhero did a thread last night about it and provided some neat info. Evidently you can use it as a viable melee weapon too. Kinda neat.

I'd say the most important thing about maximizing your spells is understanding how they function and their cast times. Certain spells have similar animations but behave nothing alike. With the new abyss sorcery it's possible for a sorcerer with 19 or more attunement to fill every slot with a completely different spell. By knowing the range and timing of your spells you'll quickly go from burning casts to being able to take 2 or 3 players before needing to recharge.

There are numerous options but really you want to avoid repeatedly casting the same spell, you can spam homing soulmass spells but always combing them with another action like a roll attack or another spell. Try to only use soul spears when your opponent is in a long animation like a miracle or heavy attack then when they come towards you cast a white dragon breath, they'll think it's another soul spear and dodge but even basic lock tracing will catch them as the leave their roll.

My personal favorite is these new abyss spells, cast a few dark orbs then when they try rushing in cast a dark bead down their throat. If your opponents dodging at long range cast dark fog to heard them where you want. (2 casts will fill the stairs at the top of Oolacile township right where phantoms invade) Pursuers is a special case, most times it can hit on its own however you should always throw in another attack like dark fog to mess up your opponents dodge and stay alert to avoid them clipping a measly one pursuer and landing a bs on you. (a surprisingly effective tactic against the spell)

Wall of text but these new spells have redefined spell caster pvp for me. Praise the Sun

I agree about the new spells being good and allowing you to use different strategies, but i was going more towards the fact that i can have over 75 homing soul masses, which is just outragous.

Plus the new spells dont give you much to cast and you need to keep going through plays just to get more. For me thats a bad thing because my main character is already on his 5th play so it could get annoying trying to build up my army of dlc spells.

Logans catalyst halves the amount of castings whereas the izalith and some other catalysts give you full casts. I guess if i have tons of spells i could use logans just to make it stronger.

So...based on that post, I assume you have absolutely no idea that their are 2 staffs belonging to Logan: The tin crystallization catalyst and Logan's Catalyst. Only the TCC halves spell cast. Logan's Catalyst has the best spell adjustment of all other catalysts except for the TCC, but functions as a normal catalyst.

It's only downside is the large amount of INT required so it best other catalysts.

What he said. Generally if you make a build with stats high enough to use white dragon breath, and you're not comfortable with your castings being halved, then logan's catalyst is the best choice.

It's not that difficult to get on your own if you have access to the lord areas. Do you have access to the Duke's Archives?

Logan's Catalyst isn't even that hard to get. Just complete the Duke's Archives and defeat hollowed Logan. There should be a treasure chest where he once was teaching the crystal magic.

You don't need to beat Hollowed Logan. You just need to make sure Hollowed Logan had spawn. So when he leaves the library once, quit and reset. The chest should be in the library carrying his entire armor set, including a pair of diapers BATTLE-READY UNDERGARMENTS!

That's actually one of the main reasons I follow through that plot line in every play through. It's hard to say no to a pair of hand-me-down magical tighty whiteys

    LOL you guys are funny.

Anyway I got the catalyst thanks to the Invader Trader. I really like the catalyst, the magic adjust is good and it still allows me to cast all the spells. Well thanks for the comments and a special thanks to the Invader Trader for his help.

I really like the witch set and her cat has the same mag adj as the starting cat so i usually use that as soon as i get it. Working on my first caster to hit 50int so once i take logan down i'll be using his cat. I didnt see you mention the bellowing dragoncrest ring. The only time i take that off is for 4 kings. If you go for the 4 kings as a caster remember to take off the dusk crown if youre using it. it dose up you're spell damage but also lowers you magic def(30% i think) with the 4 kings magic based attacks that hurts.

With this current char ive have put almost all my points into int. Have a few in vit end and 1 to str (so i can use the crest shiled) Have to say its been my easyest play though so far. taking the time to buy spells and get the dusk crown and the bellowing ring. I think the 4 kings will suck with only just under 800hp but ima give it a go happy

@Zodicus, what do u use with that setup for killing the 4 kings? weapon, armor etc? Thanks. I never have killed the 4kings with a mage before (never touched the mage class).

I would just stack poise and spam spells (I personally would still wear the Crown of Dusk and I would certainly put on the BDCR), in the end, you'll do more damage to them then they do to you.

normally i put on what ever i have that has the highest magic def then rush them and swing away while rotating to the right, blocking when they swing. Then hop between me and who ever i summoned we do enuf damage to kill them as they spawn. I use the crest sheild also. Its worked so far, not every time mind you but i get them with in a few trys. last time was at lvl 44 with beatrice and another summoned player also a caster. I did what i do and they spammed spells and we took them down pretty easy. the magic def helps alot if i blocked the hit it did almost no damage. As long as i manage to dodge his grab and that explosion thing i usually win the fight.

the reason i take the ring off is i almost always use the ring of fav with a caster so i need a slot for the artorious ring and i cant take the ring of fav off.

Yeah I definitely find that some of the easiest 4 kings fights I've ever had have been accomplished with powerful spell casting builds, focused on doing as much spell damage as possible. In fact I've found that I often end up fighting 3 kings when I'm using an INT class, just because you rip them to pieces before the fourth one can spawn.
