    Chihuahuas are so cute :3
    'specially mine :3
    And they're helluva intelligent.
My dog once put food in a napkin then put it under the table so he can eat it later.

My ex fiance had a chihuahua that used to take little nuggets of it's own poop and put them in my pants pockets while I was sleeping. Little bastard. That right there was like a metaphor for our whole relationship. Poop in my pocket.

Well they say dogs can be really in tune with the emotional states of their owners, and clearly she was very conflicted about my presence or she wouldn't have been cheating on me the way she was.

Haha, he left you little stinky presents. What in the world was the little guy thinking?

Animals do some bizarre stuff sometimes. Cats are notorious for gifting mutilated birds/squirrels/small dogs, but I've never heard of a dog giving presents.

Any dog I have will have to be up for high altitude hiking and hunting. I think any large dog can handle things like that, right? I think Great Danes get heart attacks easy because they are too big, but I'm not really into them anyways. A husky, St. Bernard, German Sheperd, something like that should be fine spending long days in the mountains?

I bet any animal shelters in your area will be able to tell you which dogs can handle altitude the best. It's definitely something to consider if you're going to be doing stuff like that. Although I guess the internet could probably tell you that just as easily.

The worst part about it is I'd obviously never know it was there until I reached into my pocket for something. So it was never just pocket full of poop, but usually hand full of poop also. At least until I learned to start checking them before putting my hand in.

    This is so hilarious.

In the field you check your boots for scorpions or snakes in the morning. In your house you have to check your pockets for dog "biscuits". Lol.

I'm quite a fan of poodles myself. They're an intelligent, friendly, and all around versatile breed. I think the important thing when picking a dog, though, is picking one you like. Just look around at as many dog breeds as you can and find one that suits your personality well, whatever it may be

Remember that some dogs need mental exercise as much as physical exercise and that only going for looks is a bad idea when choosing a breed.

Maybe not a direct copy, but same style. Hero in pose on top of pile of slain enemies, fighting off hordes of enemies.

if you live on your own you could do worse than a dingo, they are quite loyal....to one person. but in all seriousness a husky or something along the lines of a snow dog, never had one, but man they are beautiful animals

Looks just like a Husky but all white, and black eyes. Has a more playful look, not so serious like a Husky.

With the exception of some breeds that have been bred to that point that they no longer have a functional pysique or the miniatures; Good luck trying to outwalk a dog! (It's just not going to happen, high altitude or not.)

You haven't really told much about what you want in a dog/what you can offer the dog except that it sounds like you really enjoy being outdoors:)

Some points I'd consider before searching for a breed/shelter dog:
1.How much mental exercise are you willing to give?
    2. How much physical exercise are you willing to give?
    3. Do you want a dog with low, medium or high "energy level"?
    4. Do you want a dog that's easy to train?
    5. Is being able to have the dog off-leash a must?
    6. How important is good health and life-expectancy?

It is true that the giant breeds have shorter lifespan, yes.

If #4 and #5 aren't important, then I think one of the polar breeds would fit excellently. They are great outdoors-companions, but you aren't getting an obedience champion (to put it mildly), and they fail miserably on #5 because of their high hunting instinct.

Regarding the German Shepherd I'd not recommend it solely as an outdoors-companion, a life it's not likely to be content with (it needs mental exercise). The health part isn't very good either.

The dog will need high energy levels, enough for multi-day treks in the mountains. Being well behaved enough to be off a leash is a must.

I've never trained a dog before, but I usually pick things up from books and other people pretty well, and I have "trained" people. So I think I could handle a stubborn dog.

I will only be taking a few classes in college, and otherwise climbing or hiking. The dog needs to be able to be comfortable around strangers. Won't be needing a job for awhile (unless I want one) as I am getting GI bill from the army. So I'll be able to have the dog with me most of the time, I predict.

Remember that no dog is "well behaved" from the start, it's just huge differences in trainability. It doesn't sound like you are interested in much more than the "common day obedience", though, and then it's not really that important whether the dogs learns a new trick in fewer than five repetitions or not.
This hasn't really anything about intelligence to do (because you can't measure intelligence), but it'll at least give you a feeling of the difference in trainability: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Intelligence_of_Dogs
(It's wrong, by the way, because the poodle is CLEARLY the world's smartest dog ❤ silly )
I don't know which methods they uses for the testing, though. Sure, some dogs will learn if you punish them for failing (but think about the ethics 🇳🇴 ), but other "less trainable" or "stubborn" dogs will be like "*** you, be like that and don't wanna hang with you anymore". Soo...use positive methods, yay! Sun

Do you have any particular breeds in mind? I'll give my opinion if I have any happy
You can already rule out huskies, alaskan malamutes etc..

It sounds like the right dog will have a great life with what you describe cheers
