Disney Owns Star Wars Empty Disney Owns Star Wars

Post by Tolvo Wed Oct 31, 2012 10:47 am

    http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1696467/star-wars-episode-seven-disney-lucasfilm.jhtml

So it is official, Lucasfilm has been sold to Disney for a large amount of money. They are planning to make more Star Wars films that may be animated may be live action. At this point it isn't actually known in that regard. They plan to continue any work that George himself had going such as the idea of the Live Action Star Wars TV show.

What do people think of this, whether you just like the movies or you're a creepily obsessed fan like myself?

    My view upon it currently.

I'm unsure about this, I'll have to wait until they actually have a product for me to really get an idea of where this is going. They might just make some entertaining movies which I can enjoy, but just not think about when I'm thinking about the Star Wars universe because of how much I enjoy the books. But the best case scenario I can think of is if they adapt the books into great movies. Then the EU nerds get to see their favorite stories on the big screen. The movie lovers get to see great stories turned into films. Everyone wins. Either that or if they make films that just aren't contradictory of the novels I'll be highly happy. It's just wait and see at this moment.

I was waiting for this thread. Just so I could post this : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MajE0PcEoUU
No but on the serious side there are some positives : Lucas not being the director or the script writer will immensely improve the series potential for the future.

Yeah that is a big plus, I think probably the best way to look at it is this.

Anything they make can't be as bad as the prequels.

If they manage to make something worse than 1-3...Then I give up on the films industry.

3 wasn't too bad , just let down by hammy script and actors and just Lucas trademarks in general. It had the potential to be the best film in the series. Oh welp , it'll probably get remade , Hollywood have got a thing for that at the moment right?

I actually didn't like 3 either, everything just felt incredibly FORCEd to me.

Plus Anakin seemed less like someone seduced by the dark side, and more of a retard with power.

"Oh yeah, kill the jedi and their children. Then go kill the trade federation leaders since I know where they are."

    "Okay george!"

Well yeah, the film collapsed on that point and the romance ; basically anything revolving around Anakin self imploded. Well that's George for you , who else would choose Hayden Christiansen to be their leading man?

I actually wouldn't blame HC, he's a decent actor. It's more so that the poor writing, terrible direction, and the fact he had to deal so much with green screen. When I think of Anakin's issues in the film I think more about **** lines and the character having no motivation or doing things completely out of character. That isn't Hayden's fault, he has to do what he was hired to do. He has to read those lines and try and make them believable.

He had to look at a blank screen while saying "It's like sand, it gets everywhere." when talking about love with a static camera on him without George giving him any direction or ideas for the scene. If you watch the behind the scenes you'll see just how much George's directing impacted the film.

Disney is great and produced a ton of great movies, but i'm really unsure whether they have the experience or expertise to pull off a reboot of star wars

Well I suppose that will depend on what your view of the Avengers depending on whether they can make a good Star Wars movie.

If I remember correctly they're going to have the same people who are working on the Marvel Movies work on their Star Wars films.

I guess the adrenaline junkies will like it.. I enjoyed the avengers, but that kind of vibe really isn't the same as what i think people would want for star wars, there needs more refinement and slick drama pieces in there..

Hopefully that team will have a variety of things they can do, rather than just packing the most action they can into 2 hours

I'll take Ghostrider over the prequels and I hate Cage as an actor. Exception: Raising Arizona

So I suppose Disney just might make me a Star Wars fan again

I agree, Star Wars was almost more about the conflict of the people rather than the big battles. They make for great climactic scenes of course but for the most part the films are loved for the interaction between characters.

A story that follows the classic Hero's Journey but really well done with a great connection to the people on screen.

    That ^
The first time I ever saw Luke get his hand cut off was epic. I still cringe a little. Seeing Anakin burning? No effect. The only difference being I still like Luke as a character. Less effort on clones shooting robots George and remember there's a story you wanted to tell

Well my biggest hope is that they do book adaptations. That would give us EU nerds solace knowing our stories aren't just tossed aside, and it would give the rest "New" stories for them to enjoy.

Kind of like a comic book adaptation, like how the Marvel Movies are doing it. Perhaps a bit better though since I will nit pick every flaw! (I swear if Grand Admiral Thrawn has black hair.)

It could be good could be bad, mostly I'm hoping they don't try to rely too heavily on the special effects and focus mostly on just making solid movies.

Even if they break the canon I can ignore that if they are just good movies.

He's one of my favorite reviewers due to the fact that he actually knows a lot about how films are made and how the industry works.

    http://redlettermedia.com/plinkett/star-wars/

They can be a bit dark and vulgar though, since the persona of the reviewer is a 106 year old serial killer. Almost like a found footage review, with splices of a horror movie during scenes of the review as a joke in that he doesn't know how to properly edit. So he'll be commenting when you suddenly see him in a dark basement. And he'll voice over "Oh I didn't know this was on this tape, uh look away for a bit. If anyone knows how to edit this out send me an email."

He's done it for other films as well, Avatar, Star Trek is a series, Indiana Jones Crystal Skull, etc.

I can't really say I greatly enjoyed any of the Star Wars movies (though I haven't seen 4-6 since I was about 6 years old), but I do really enjoy the franchise. I've spent a lot of time playing KotOR and I really like the Star Wars atmosphere, so hopefully Disney will be able to make a movie I enjoy too

Disney doesn't stand out as having mismanaged IP's so I am totally cool with it. Avengers was very much fan service, and they did Pirates very well with little source material. We've never really seen what they can do with a large established universe, but I do know that Disney is very concerned with the brand image and putting their best foot forward. They strive to put out the best out there in their entertainment products, and have certainly never demonstrated themselves as purveyors of shovelware media. Just look at the resources they put into Epic Mickey on the Wii, knowing full well the demographics they were breaking into.
