Help me kill the mutt Empty Help me kill the mutt

Post by BIG TIME MASTER Thu Nov 01, 2012 2:13 pm

I'm running through a NG with a Monk character that I am using for co-op. SL 35, all points into faith and a few in strength and dex for weapon requirements, sticking with starting armor and I have a +4 Lightning Winged Spear and +12 Claymore. I also use lightning spears and heal miracles.

I am trying to go no shield, and so far with the combonation of the spears length and speed and the claymores weighty attacks, I haven't had any trouble all the way through Anor Londo. Until I got to the dog.

Sif, the mangy mutt, is intent on pissing me off. I just went against him seven times, each time got him down to 1/4 health within five minutes, and then inevitably he gets me with a OHK with his big double circle swing. He always gets me as I am rolling towards him, trying to get beneath him, after he jumps back to get space. I've tried just sprinting in, that was a no go. I've tried staying back and waiting until after the attack, but he always ends up getting me anyways, just as I am barely under his chin. I'm not going to try again today, to much failure in one dose.

Anybody beat him no shield and have some tips? I'm willing to pay.

You seem to have the right idea. Just get underneath him and stay there. If he jumps away just make sure to time your dodges right to get back underneath him. One thing I sometimes do is fight him next to a wall, sometimes when he tries to jump away it's into the wall so he doesn't actually go anywhere and you are still under him. It's not fool proof but it may help.

That's my usual tactic, to stay near the gate so he gets kind of stuck sometimes. Also if he gets on the rocks, his attacks go over your head alot.

I feel like the way I am doing it though that when I do finally get him it will have just been luck. It seems like there must be a way to execute with consistent precision.

You just need to learn how to dodge his attacks. All of them can be dodged by rolling toward him, placing you under him in position to attack, but you may choose not to do that for some attacks. Some attacks are trickier to dodge and can end up in insta-death, like his double-spin attack, so you can choose to roll away from him instead, and wait for your opening when he comes at you with the attack you want.

Keep an eye on his tells. There are subtle differences in the way he approaches you that let you know which attack he's about to use. I can't tell you what they are specifically right now because it's been a while since I've fought him! But definitely just learn his tells, decide which attacks you want to dodge towards him and attack and which you want to dodge away from him and evade and you won't have a problem. Also, Sif is very easy to bait into an attack and heal. Just get close enough that he initiates an attack, then you can roll backwards out of his range and you'll have time to heal.

I think it defeats the purpose if someone else kills him...

Q: "How do I kill someone without a shield?"
A: "Get someone to do it for you."

    ...

Easy answers would be increase your claymore's strength, same with armour. That gives you the best tools. For weapons, Claymore and Spear aren't great, a fast weapon with a bit of range will do better. But if those are your chosen weapons, I'd go with Claymore.

You can beat it will just rolling, and occasionally a 2H claymore parry. What you may want to do, is practice just defending and rolling with another character, or pick up a shield, and just practice defending. When you feel confident, read him a bit better, then take him on.

I am on 360 but that wasn't me. I've never summoned for Sif.

Thanks for the vid, btw! That Queelag sword is doing a bit more damage than my Claymore, but not too much. The main thing I see that the player did different from me though is that he circles to the right and outside of Sifs legs, whereas I always stay beneath him directly.

I'm gonna make him pay tommorow.

    So yeh, tips....
-Upgrade your weapon for more damage
    -Learn the timings to dodge
-Keep on his back right leg (dunno if this helps, but it is what I did)

Sorry; meant just blocking with a claymore. Believe it has 60% physical damage reduction. Can help if you're not in position and going to get hit.

Yeah, but you can parry then switch to 2H on other enemies, but I'm sure you knew that.

I do use it to block quite a bit, but I actually didn't know that you could parry with a naked hand, never tried it! I usually keep my talisman in my left, so I switch from two handed to toss a spear or if I want to use the thrusting attack for certain situations.

Thanks for the help, we'll see how this goes shortly.
