Hurricane Sandy
So I just found out that I don't have school today, because of a hurricane.. in October.. in New York. Strike anyone else as being a little odd? I'm not saying I believe any of this end of the world nonsense, because I don't, but this certainly is a little strange. Anybody else on the east coast experiencing this wacky autumn weather? Here's hoping we don't lose power. I'm cool as long as there's power.

Re: Hurricane Sandy
I'm not particularly concerned about myself. I don't think we've ever gotten directly hit. They've come our way before, but usually either dissipate by the time they get to us or turn. I guess parts of NYC are being evacuated though. I'm more worried about my extended family. Pretty much all of them live in the Baltimore area, which I guess is getting hit a lot harder

Re: Hurricane Sandy
I heard New Jersey was going to get the worst though. Still though, these are sub-100 MPH winds. American building codes are built to withstand that.
Flooding may cause some problems and some areas will get it worse than others. As for the power, I would at least take precautions if you don't want to lose it. The storm may very well knock out your power, so think about investing in a generator if you haven't already done so.

Re: Hurricane Sandy
That's what it always ends up being up here. The last time we got hit by a big tropical storm, I can't remember what year it was, at least a couple of years, a lot of the surrounding towns got really severely flooded. Lucky I live in a city nicknamed 'city of hills.' The entire town is built into the side of a big hill. So we rarely get flooded at all. As long as the wind doesn't take out our power I think I'll be cool in that regard. Hopefully anyway. I'm just buying some grub that I don't have to cook and some instant coffee just in case. I just heard on the news that there are several mandatory evacuations in NJ. You're probably right about them getting it the worst.

Re: Hurricane Sandy
Are they still predicting that it might meet a cold air mass and drop snow? So far here we have just heard wind and rain which is actually just normal autumn weather slightly amped

A hurricane-snow combination would be interesting indeed.

Re: Hurricane Sandy
I heard snow predicted yesterday, but haven't heard it yet today. I mean even if it did start to snow it would actually more normal than it was last year in October. I hope it does. I miss snow.

Re: Hurricane Sandy
Me too. Last year's lack of it sucked. Pendant, a nor'easter is similar and basically it's a whiteout with crazy winds and so much snow on the ground the wind can't whip it all up

Re: Hurricane Sandy
That right there is why I'm not super concerned. Usually all the worst weather we get up here comes off the great lakes. It brings cold fronts down from Canada over the great lakes and we get hit really really hard. Usually all the weather we get from the south dissipates well before we see it.

Re: Hurricane Sandy
The issue here isn't so much the severity of the storm, but that it is passing directly over areas that rarely, if ever, have experienced a direct hurricane. The region I live in for example is on edge because of an undeveloped drainage system and also being in a valley which creates a wind tunnel. 70 mph winds, while not strong by hurricane standards become a bullet in the valley and as a result they are anticipating a lot of treefall and subsequent damage.

Re: Hurricane Sandy
That's a good point. Generally when we have deaths here due to storms it's from tree fall. Doesn't happen often, but does happen sometimes.

But like they say, the weather is part of what makes a Northeasterner tough!

Our severe winters certainly build character. I for one love the snow. Most people think I'm nuts for planning on moving somewhere cold after graduation. I'm just not a big warm weather guy.

Re: Hurricane Sandy
Category 1 is super strong for an area that isn't used to receive hurricanes. It's not about the winds, but the water. Those things have so much water, imagine 24 hours of very heavy rain non stop. The winds of a category 1 can destroy some weak trees, don't know about houses made of wood but maybe. This hurricane is super interesting, I don't know if it would actually be beneficial for all the water to turn into snow (if that is even possible). I live in the Caribbean by the way, planning to fly to NYC next Saturday.

Re: Hurricane Sandy
I'm watching the weather channel and what's going on around us right now is pretty crazy. I live right in central New York, almost right smack dab in the center, and about an hour south west of us they're getting 2ish feet of snow, then about 2 hours south east they're getting massive amounts of rain and flooding. Both are heading towards us. Guess we'll have to wait and see what happens. New York harbor looks pretty nuts right now though. I'm seeing some crazy pictures of the sky over the statue of liberty. Almost looks like the sky from the movie Independence Day. Really really dark

Re: Hurricane Sandy
Well it seems like Oneonta schools really rarely close. Almost every time we get severe enough weather for all the schools around us to close all of ours remain opened, but today ours are closed. I have a feeling they will be tomorrow too because it's supposed to be even worse then.

Re: Hurricane Sandy
I read an interview with a French specialist who precised that we don't fear the strength of Samdy but it's unusual direction. Instead of going east after passing the coast,it will go west by combining with an anti-depression(dunno how to say it in English)
And from that I've heard, they fear Sandy deals huge damage to the subway system.
Anyway, you guys better not die from this \o/

Isn't there supposed to be snow involved with this?
