Isn't that just the overkill bonus at work?
On NG I'm pretty sure DWs give 1200 souls per kill, unless they are overkilled in which case they drop 1440.

That Lucerne did ~800 damage to those DWs see if you have another weapon lying around that does comparable damage, it should give you the same 1440 souls the Lucerne did.

I always thought that was kind of Neat 
I wonder if it works on Bosses ? You can Kill Bosses in One hit ...I have to test it on the Asylum Demon on NG+ im too curious

Tried a dgm+15 and i got 1400 souls so yeah its just the op bonus..

if they keep the lucerne as it is in the next souls game they should make each strike damage the targets helm by 10 durability... that would work and counter things like masks or the dusk crown.
