Help with PvP Empty Help with PvP

    Post by tetris42 Mon Feb 13, 2012 12:55 am

Hey guys! I've been getting my butt handed to me in PvP. Been trying it out for the first time at the Demon Ruins before the Centipede Demons, and ladies and gents, I'll tell you, I pulled a disgusting 4-23, and only one of those wins consisted of me actually killing the person. I'm heartbroken, and farming for Humanity(37+11 on my body, woohoo!), ready to give it another go. But before I go back and get screwed over, I was looking to see if you fella's wouldn't mind passing some protips over to me. bounce

    Here are some stats!

    Vit-28
    Att-10
    End-34
    Str-45
    Dex-22
    Res-10
    Int-10
    Faith-12

So yeah, 'dem stats. As you can see, mostly strength build, largely due to the fact that I've been proudly wielding a BK Halberd+5 since level 40 ^^. I've got full giants armor+5 that I usually wear, all that jazz. Rings are usually Havel's Ring and then whatever happens to suit my needs, sometimes Cloranthy, sometimes Steel Defense. So yeah, SL 90. I've also been using a Great Stone Sword +5, Greatshield of Artorias, Lifehunt Scythe +4, and Lighting Spear +5. I tend to get backstabbed a lot, but fortunately, with my armor, I can take about 2, sometimes 4 if I'm lucky. I've been reading around, people suggest practicing, but at level 90, who can I practice against? I'm not in the Forest Hunter covenant, so yeah.

Can a newb like me be even helped?

    Help with PvP V6nh2a

That's what I'm betting on. Any help would be appreciated! ^^

Well, if the opponent is using a darkwood grain with ring of favor, he can easily move in and out with his attacks and whittle down your health.

Never really had anyone whittle down my health, rather it's just back stabs. Only time that ever happened was with that guy with the shotel, but yeah. Still, got any ways to actually help with the problem?

Tetris42 - you are basically a tank build and if you want to maintain such a build you will need to keep increasing your ability to take damage and deal damage. You basically want to make it so that if your opponent makes a mistake (failed back-stab for instance) you can dispatch him in one shot (or stun-lock them so you can get another swing in). You have some heavy weapons so stun-locking should be key component of your battle strategy. With the heavy armor you are wearing you will never be able to keep up with a faster opponent, as bloodpixel stated, so you will need to be able to properly cope with the damage you receive (i.e. BSs). You will definitely need to increase your HP though by either investing in Vitality or wearing the Mother's mask. War of attrition should be the basis of your strategy - outlasting your opponent is the goal.

Getting your opponent to hesitate (they are thinking how to crack your defenses) before striking due to your heavy armor (and your ability absorb damage)or baiting them to go blow for blow with you would also be important.

Hopefully this helps out a bit.

Yeah, this helps a ton. Thanks man. Just a question though...by BSs, you mean Balder Side Sword, and what exactly is stunlocking?

When I say BS - I mean back-stab. Also, stun-locking is when a weapon (usually great sword or higher/bigger) completely breaks your poise to the point that you cannot evade or defend your self allowing the attacking player another open shot. Some weapons like the moonlight greatsword, greatsword of astorias, black knight weapons, claymore, zwei, etc can stunlock you easily if you don't have high enough poise (moonlight greatsword stun-lock effect is slightly different because it only deals magic damage which kinda violates the poise rule since poise in my opinion only counts towards physical/kinetic damage). Since you are wielding a Great Stone Sword - it should be large enough to cause stunlock. Once you have your opponent stun-locked you basically keep attacking until you kill them or you run out of stamina.

If you are wearing the complete Giants armor set then your poise should be around 91 which is higher than the all important 54 poise threshold needed to prevent from being stun-locked if hit by a greatsword (or heavier weapon) one time. Also, remember poise is like any other resistance in the game, it can be worn down (like how poison builds up and you start receiving poison damage if your meter fills up - poise is the exact opposite - starts full then empties) if hit by something heavy multiple times.

Keep dueling so you can increase your experience fighting against faster players. Losing is not always a bad thing - turn a loss into a learning opportunity.

    Hope this helps..

A big suggestion I can give you is keep your vitality up. I'd focus on leveling that up to at least 40 if you can 50. It will give you the ability to take 33-4 backstabs with the heavy armor. I would continue to wear the havels, and consider adding the poise ring to make your character a brick wall or the ring of favor and protection to increase your vit and end. I would also definitely cap your end at 40 to max our stamina. I would consider switching from the black knight halberd to something like the black knight greatsword to make better use of your stats. Plus the sweeping motion of the weapon will help fend off backstabbers.

I'm not much of a tank but this is what I have to offer, hope it helps.

Good advice already, learn to watch how you get BS and when someone is trying for a BS. Then learn to counter BSs, try youtube which had some great BS and counter BS vids. Practice, practice, practice.
Dont get too down about early pvp defeats, learn each time and keep on fighting. Dont fall into cheap dirty tactics you might see used, it will only hinder your skill growth. Stick to the true psth of the warrior and you will master the way.

1 last note. Get to sl120 and come join us in fightclub, its a great fun way to practice.
    Good luck. Happy hunting.

For a 120 SL build, here are some general stat guidelines.

Vitality: 40-50. Anything below, you are risking a rapid death. Above 50 = severe diminishing returns, put stats elsewhere.

Att: depends on your setup. I like it at 10, just to use Great Combustion

End: stamina caps at 40, so, unless you need to roll in heavy armor, don't go over. Lighter weapons can get by with low 30's, heavy weapons, stay at 40

Str: never go over 40, unless you really want a heavy weapon. If you only use a weapon in 2 hands, then don't go over 27 (2H at 27 = same AR as 1H 40).

    Dex: never go over 40.

Faith/Int - shoot for 50 if you want to use buffs or miracles/magic.

Resistance - never put stats into it. Waste of time.

**Elemental weapons - get the base stats needed to use the weapon. Increasing the stats beyond will only waste souls, there will be no change to the AR.

That is a rough general guideline. Hope that helps you decide on some stats.

As mentioned above, Vit def. 40ish, I say 40ish because the return diminishes over 40 and anything above 45 is a waste (45 is ok actually) but Vit and End def 40 for a Heavy build.

The best defense against BS is quick response times, this means either using a quick weapon (heavier leaves you a bit more vulnerable for counterattacks) or alternatively use a setup that works with the DWGR ring (its superior to Havels in any way). Youll get a lot of flack about being unoriginal however.

If you still want to use the Halberd I would recommend a high phys def cloth chest (Dingy +10), havels legs/arms paired with DWGR and any ring you like (Favor and Protection maybe) and any head you like (most used are either Mothers or Fathers Mask).
