I love rapier type weapons, but none of them do enough damage. Am I just not built in dex enough, or do they kick in at a much higher level?

The standard rapier kicks in with critical attacks, since it gets a higher modifier for them than most other weapons in the game. Ricard's Rapier is beastly when buffed and using its heavy attack. The estoc is essentially a kind of thrusting longsword you can use from behind a shield. The mail breaker is useful if you want a thrusting sword but have to keep your equip burden down.

That, and they all do piercing damage, which is arguably the best kind of damage in the game. Only lightning damage rivals it.

You generally need high Dex for them to start doing good damage on the normal upgrade path, but they'll never be as strong as other weapons damagewise because they're so fast and can be used behind a shield. I'd say the Estoc is the best; it has the most damage and range.

Agreed, but Ricard's does have a sweet but easily parry-able strong attack, activated by pressing the R2 button twice in succession for all those not in the know. twisted

Don't forget about velka's. Its in my opinion the best rapier. About the same range as the estoc, massive damage with the right stats, deceptively good criticals, an r2 that no one seems to expect you to use AND its pretty much the classiest weapon in the game.

Basically if you want to use rapiers effectively you need to do one of three things.

    1. Learn to dodge and poke. You can go completely untouched and chip away at your enemies health. If they run to heal, just bs. Simple.

    2. Learn to turtle. Get a good shield, high end and a ton of stamina regen and laugh as they try to break your iron defense as you poke at them. Combine this with the leo ring and you can punish every move they make if your timing is right.

    3. Learn to use parry/riposts and backstabs. This is where rapiers shine. Most rapiers can take out your average player in 2-3 backstabs and 1-2 ripostes. Plus nothing feels better than landing a parry in pvp. NOTHING.

Tell me about it! I don't think I'll ever forget the first time I successfully landed a P&R in PvP, I was in so much shock that I froze just long enough to give my opponent the time to recover and roll back-stab me for a OHK! lol

Velka's really only shines on a Dex/Int build, other rapiers have nearly as good damage for less stat investment. My fav. is Ricard's for the classiness, but Velka's is my second. It's R2 combos well off of the poke against 0 poise builds.

In terms of shields, the best to use a rapier with are powerful mid shields. The Crest and Dragon Crest are fine, especially for blocking elementals, but the Balder Shield for its stability, the Black knight shield for its Stability/fireblock combo (seriously, you can just laugh when you opponent switches to his pyro hand), the Silver Knight Shield for its incredible stability, (76!) and the Spider Shield for blocking all poison buildup (invaluable against bow users), are imo the best options.

Lightning Rapier is a staple secondary RH on my Dex katana builds. If I land a parry I switch to that. Also, since I am using C Blade, I will use it should HP be too low to accept the 20 dmg penalty it inflicts on users.

The nice thing about ele rapiers is that they ignore defense for the most part on critical attacks. So although your regular hits suffer due to split damage, your crits actually do more than a standard rapier in most cases.

    So yes, Rapier Class, Good.

Watch Glatts' video comparing the crit damage of a +15 rapier with 40 dex and a +5 chaos with 10 humanity. There's a tiny, tiny difference; crits don't ignore all defense.

Everyone is answering from a PvP perspective.

PvE, they're not as good, as many enemies can't be parried.

Good dex weapons for PvE: Scimitar, Falchion, Balder Side Sword, any kind of katana.
Rapier just isn't as good, as you're not going to turtle and poke at bosses, nor can you crit them, nor does dancing and poking around be as effective as a spammable dex weapon.
The only rapier I'd use for PvE would be Ricard's.

PvP: Rapiers of all kinds are good.

I would agree that in PvE against bosses the rapier isn't the best option. Yet regarding PvE against most of the enemies leading up to the boss, the rapier class is damn good. I have found riposting (when you can) is typically an insta-death (up until about NG++ depending on your stats) and BS'n is pretty darn nasty as well. Tag on a crit-hit ring and you are pretty burly in PvE against most anything that is not a boss (other than Gwyn - riposte the hell outta that flaming jerk).

Depends on what area you're in, and what skills you possess.

It's great for experienced people that can parry, and exploit movesets to backstab. I wouldn't recommend it to someone new to the game though.

There are also areas of the game that it's just not that great. For a PvE run for a new player, I would not recommend it.

Did you want any help on a weapon for your current build? Or are you just curious about the effectiveness of a rapier for PvE?

Many of the weapons are for PvP, with effects and moves that they didn't try to balance for PvE.
