The job of a white / yellow phantom

Post by WandererReece on Tue Oct 09, 2012 10:03 pm

When I summon a phantom ally I expect that phantom to be my body guard. It is supposed to do everything nessisary to keep me alive. It is to sacrivice itself if nessisary, but I try not to put it in that position unless I'm fighting the Bed of Chaos. If I have a phantom acting cowardly, ex. fearing death, then it is not doing it's job. Also Warriors of Sunlight should take this to heart, because their covenent was based on Co - Op.

Once I summoned a Warrior of Sunlight and he stayed behind me the whole time. I thought it was because he was wearing Smuge's armor. Then I got an invasion message and the sunbro magically vanished. He didn't leave, he just hid somewhere. I finaly found him in a corner. Then I died.

Most of the time the phantoms I encounter do what they are supposed to do, but sometimes they slack a little. Although it has never been as extreame as this. I don't care if your not the best bodyguard in Lordran, but if I summon you, then at least act like a bodyguard.

Also, don't take this too seriously. Most of my phantoms have been better bodyguards then me, even the non sunbro ones. (But the sunbros are also great.)

When I'm helping someone, I don't always know which path they plan on taking...for example, getting summoned in Anor Londo but they just arrived at the bonfire and haven't opened the shorcut yet. So I'll typically allow them to lead but I will stay close and assist them as needed. I've had a few instances where someone was going through an area for the first time and they weren't sure where they needed to go so I led them. Also, you don't always know if a host has collected all the items they want to collect in any area, so I don't think its a good idea to just take the obvious quickest path towards the boss, and then turn around to find out the host has gone in another direction to pick something up.

Exactly, I always try to stay next to the host, unless an invader comes. Then I play with the invader. If the host looks lost I might point them in the right direction. (I literaly point sometimes.)

As a pahntom you are there to protect the host, however it remains the hosts job to be the leader. By that logic if I am a phantom I will stand behind you, and follow you around, only emerging to fight. If I am low health, I may move away so I dont die, because if I die how can I protect you?

When I went around as a Sunbro I normally showed the host the whole area unless if I saw a lot of of items picked up. Then I would normally just help get to the boss and if anyone invaded... well there is a bit of a no mercy policy with invaders if you're being a legit sunbro IE. kill them by any means possible.

It was very annoying when the host would summon another phantom and they would always run away from invaders. There was actually one weird occasion that I had to deal with, when a white phantom just vanished while I me and the host were dealing with the Channeler. It took a couple of minutes going through the rest of the depths before we found him waiting by the white fog.

I aggree that when you summon someone, u r effectively asking for them to assist you. However I feel the summoner also needs to show they are not invalids or totally dependant on who they summoned and expect the summoned player to do ALL their fighting. When I am summoned, I tend to run next or behind the summoner, as I don't know where they are going, or what their intentions are re summoning me. I think the nice thing about summoning others is to also learn from them, and for the summoner to be encouraged to try a boss on their own with what they have learned.

I think the other thing a summoner has to keep in mind is that the summoned player is limited when it comes to healing themselves. They are restricted to the Heal miracle if they have it, OR to use up a humanity item or a weapon or item that does some small heaing (like the ring of evil eye). therefore a summoned player who has been battling for the summoner and is low on health, should be healed by the summoner. Have been in a few battles as a a summoned player, and i battled for the summoner, only to enter boss fight with low health because the summoner is stingy on their estus flasks.

To the OP- I hear what you are saying, but it is not always possible to immediately determine what the Host wishes you to do, which I can imagine is much worse for us PS3 gamers who do not have Voicechat to fall back on, and so for this reason alone I will generally stand back and wait for the Host to make the first move. That said I will always take the lead when an invasion occurs, or we reach a particularly hard part of the level we are on, as (not wishing to state the blatantly obvious) a dead Host is no use to me whatsoever.

^This is why a teamchat would be awesome 'cause as a Sunbro,I always want to shout to the host either to enter the boss gate when invaded or run away from the invader and let the sunbros keep the invader at bay.

Too many newbies underestimate invaders and often get OS by a great combustion or Lighting Claymore when they are just starting the game because they tried to beat him without relying on sunbros(even though I always die but at least I allow the host to confront the boss)

I sacrifice my life for the host, plenty of times, and quite often. However, i go down kicking, as my co-op is a princess guard, sanctus using, ring of evil eye -fog ring monster, with a spear too!

Obviously it takes me a while to die, i protect the host hard, strong, and to the end, from anything and everything.

When i'm summoned, i really don't think too much about that kind of thing, i try to think of it more as we're a team, rather than me being his bodyguard, because honestly, the thought of that just pisses me off. So i never consider it my main goal to protect the host, but rather to offer my help with the area and/or boss. Having said that, i do of course protect the host at all times, or else the jolly co-op shall end, and i don't want that to happen.

I'm happy to lead or follow, whichever the host seems to want. The problem with leading is that it isn't too difficult to lose your host, especially in Upper Blighttown. I try to take it relatively slow, but it still happens.

One thing I do is if a host falls to their death I jump after them. Solaire did that for me once. Just spreading the Sunbro love.

I agree. It's just one of the terms I use. I try to gesture to the summon sometimes, and will heal them if nescisary. However, when they fear death I think, "OMG really? I can summon you again!" When I am summoned I will sometimes win some battles that I didn't think I could win because I didn't fear death, knowing I lose nothing and can be summoned again.

Edit: I use the term bodyguard because if a summon dies he loses nothing, but if the host dies it's game over and he loses his humanities and souls.

That's awesome, a nice gesture to the host.

I have an sl 50ish co-op guy at Anor Londo on each system, and as we all know there are TONS of invasions from the last bonfire in Anor Londo. Yesterday, right before the fog gate my host was invaded. The invader ran and hid among the giant sentinels, like most invaders do. I didn't feel like **** around so I jumped down and went for him while trying to avoid the swings of the giant halberds. I killed him the same time a Giant killed me.

My point is that the host came back and got me. They always do this in Anor Londo... always. I think that's pretty cool. Maybe they just grab the first sign they see, but I don't think so. I think they go back and look for the guy who just helped them out and they get him back, then without fail they do the joy or hurrah gesture. That's awesome. Dark Souls co-op is really cool.

I do this if I can, not just because they proved they are good, or because I like them, but because they already know where I have and have not been, which makes things go smoother.

Also I'll do the facepalm guesture when I come back after dying in an embaresing way.
