......the first time I ran into those grey skellies in Demon's Souls 4-1. I was tooling around in DS this morning, and fired up one of my NG++ characters. Reminded me of the first time I saw those nasties. Wandered into Shrine of Storms, spot this one lone skelly and think, "I'm gonna tune this guy". Then he comes rolling at you like an out of control car accident, and slams that sword into your forehead, or breaks your guard. As tough as Dark Souls was the first time, I can't think of one enemy that freaked me out like that (Blighttown guys who eat your head came a close second, though).

I thought the skellies were funny especially when they get mad.

I wasn't to fond of the hydra in Darkroot the first time around.

Nah, the Mind Flayers were way more scarer, and the sound of their ringing bells still haunts my waking dreams. :affraid:

YOU DIED
Skelies creeped you out? Come on, all they do is roll around which is kind of funny. Minflayers, no, Latria prison is the ultimate scare. There is so much atmosphere in that place that all I want to do is get it over with! Just to not hear the cries and rings...the RINGS!!!

The Tower of Latria level in DS was definitely FROM's attempt to mind-fk us all bigtime!
I mean if the opening Prison section was not bad enough, we then had to contend with wading through a swamp populated by Manipedes, a mountain of a beast that could easily OHK you who then calls on the help from another equally sized beast when it's lifebar gets too low, and an end of level Boss who back in the day nine times out of ten ended up being controlled by a fellow gamer.
Genius, pure genius, and I absolute luv them for it!

my first play through, the first encounter with the red dragon coming up that narrow staircase scared the crap out of me.

I'm more inclined to believe in that instance it merely made you jump, as this is what that scene is clearly designed to do. With the Tower of Latria we're talking proper long-lasting edge of your seat crap yourself everytime you walk around a corner terror the first time you venture forth into the darkness, especially if you've no idea what to expect, which is a whole different ball game, and which has sadly not been replicated anywhere in DkS!

DeS seems like it has better atmosphere for unnerving you in my opinion. Maybe because it had darker visuals? I dunno, there was definitely something, but I just can't put my finger on it.

Yeah, DeS was a lot more atmospheric. Although it lacked in story compared to DkS. I personally liked DeS. The level layouts and bosses were just amazing. If anyone wants to play, I have a bunch of levels, add me. Pratix2.

I feel quite the opposite. Nothing in Demon's Souls really scared me but in Dark Souls I did jump once or twice. The dog skeletons in the ToG surprised me when I first saw one and I've hated them ever since and running into the wheel skeletons in the Painted World scared me because I didn't expect them.

Latria 2 wasn't so bad...after you fight creepy minflayers while hearing the noise of trapped prisoners who are having their souls harvested by a doll residing in a church claiming to give them salvation from a prison filled with iron maidens, torture devices in every cell, giant machine death traps, creepy singing woman, some obnoxiously loud guy and apparently a few jailers that love stitching all you prisoners together and find it funny to imprison you in pots where you should probably suffocate to death, yet don't for some reason; on top of course, of the 24/7 stench of blood and misery.

I haven't played DeS but from the sounds of it DkS leans more towards an outward "I'm gonna kick your butt" attitude from the enemies (at least bosses) lumbering over to you, 3-5 times your size. If I had to guess DeS was meant to surprise you and attempted to torture you in any place you failed to pass on the first try.

The scarriest moment was when my sword bounced harmlessly of a morbidly obease fat guy that killed me in one hit. :affraid: I thought, "How do I hurt this thing!" *Wham! (hit by fat guy)* "Noooooooo!"
Didn't play again for one week.
Also, I loved the tower. It was like Metal Gear Solid or Assassan's Creed.

Basically, what I meant was the shock of that first attack. Undead amounted to what I had seen in 1-1 and 1-2. It was pure coincidence that I wandered into 4-1 next and had one of those juggernauts steamroll into my and break my guard.
However, I do agree with comments about Latria. The first time through 3-1 I spent 4 hours literally creeping through that place, only to get smoked by the boss. Thank you From, for giving us shortcuts.
The thing I'll never forget about Demon's Souls, and it's the single element that made it much more frightening than DkS...is the sound. Someone described 3-1 quite well, but how about the sound of flies in the Valley of Defilement? I mean, if death and decay had a sound, that was it. Even the crows and ravens in world 1...everything seemed to suggest death.
