Can sone one quizzle me this?!

Post by ViralEnsign_ on Mon Oct 01, 2012 6:26 am

“The Universe is the Great All, and offers a paradox to great for the finite mind to grasp. As the living brain cannot concieve of a non living brain- although it may think it can- the finite mind cannot grasp the infinite.

The prosaic fact of the universe's existance alone defeats both the pragmatist and the romantic .”

    - The Man in Black-

Yeah I was thinking about this extract from Stephen King's Gunslinger and it really just spoke volumnes to me though at present I have not the frame of mind to fully develop the meaning I would derive from this piece.

So in the mean while I thought I would pose this here and see how you guys deal with it....or even if you deal with it at all.

All you have to do to make sense of this is to look up at the Milky Way on a cloudless night and realise you are one person on one planet orbiting one sun and that there are billions of suns in the Milky Way which is only one of an infinite number of galaxies.

I think what Stephen King was getting at is that the human mind just can't grasp the concept of infinity.

I love those books (all time favorites actually) and that's a pretty profound statement. There's another apt description of this concept in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy when they're describing a method of torture in which the person is shown infinity. In almost all cases the result is insanity. I deal with this concept by doing something I almost never do. Give up. It's true. Man cannot grasp infinity and attempting does cause for myself and others I've discussed it with actual distress. Think of it this way as a geographic concept of infinity (although true infinity is not limited in this way). Start by thinking of you, then your building you're in, town, country, planet, galaxy, etc. You're probably imagining reference points with this exercise. Now here's what infinity means: infinity is ENDLESS reference points while simultaneously with it's expanse ZERO reference points because with an endless amount of points, each individual point is meaningless

Have you ever watched a television programme where quantum physicists or cosmologists try to explain the likes of string theory and/or alternative universes? If you have then you'll know what it feels like to have your brain pulled out through your nostrils. It really is that painful.

I can't wait until HBO makes this into a TV series....last I heard was that it was a work in progress.
