I don't summon help very often (I think I've only done it three times) because I'm not sure how I'm expected to behave. Is there some kind of etiquette involved? I usually bow then wait to see what my helper's modus operandi is before joining in because I don't want to get in the way but last night at the Kiln my help crystalled out before we got to Gwynn. Maybe it was because my style of play didn't suit them. I like to soften up my quarry with a few arrows before attacking them proper and I think they got impatient but surely, if you answer a summons, you should be prepared to give the host a little leeway? I find this kind of behaviour very demoralising and it will be a long time before I summon help again.

Re: When you summon help......
That was rude of the summon. Don't take that as all COOP players. When in doubt, look for the Sunbros... they ALWAYS want to help!

Re: When you summon help......
The experience i've had from co-oping in Kiln is that most summons seem to expect pvp, as if we were in the forest, that could very well have been the case to why the player left once you got close to Gwyn. Otherwise, people don't seem to expect much, start with a bow, then play, don't take too long or they will leave. That's what i'm used to anyway.
Edit: You shouldn't let one summon get in the way of summoning in the future though, as co-op in Dks is a whole lot of fun, not all players do that kind of thing anyway.

Point taken but I think if you put down your summon sign you should be prepared to do your best for the host, no matter how cack-handed they are.

Re: When you summon help......
I wish it was like that, but everyone thinks differently about things, and that's why you won't always encounter people agreeing with you. But like i said, i think you should try a couple more summons, see where it leads, and perhaps you'll find someone who won't just leave once you reach the boss area.
Edit: What hellion said, not all coop players are like that, though, just to point out, not every single sunbro is helpful either, as much as i hate to admit it, 50% of the sunbros i've summoned have NOT been helpful, but yeah, not all coop people are like that. Just thought i'd add that.

Re: When you summon help......
It is possible that when the person was summoned, something IRL came up and they had to leave. I had summoned someone who was AFK for five minutes, so I just used the Black Crystal. I think the etiquette is that if you put down your summon sign, you should expect to help whomever summons you and be prepared to spend some time doing it.
At one point, a phantom had helped me defeat Nito then asked me for help with the same. They weren't aware that ding this would require me to go all the way through the Catacombs and then the Tomb of Giants again to get there since there is no easy way back to Nito's entrance, but I just kept him updated on my progress as I made my way back. Jolly cooperation is a two way street.

Maybe he wanted to gank/farm invaders. It's pretty common at the Kiln.

Re: When you summon help......
if summoning in Dark Anor Londo, The Forest, or the Kiln, 50-60% of your summons will instantly crystal out intending to PvP instead of help kill bosses.

Re: When you summon help......
To me it happened the opposite. I was summoned in Anor Londo and it was already dark so I assumed the host was there only for ganking invaders, but I also thought he might wanted to fight Gdolin too so I waited to see what were his or her ideas.
When we arrived to the big hall that leads to the main entrance and the boss gate he started to use the DF. I just did the shrug and look skyward gestures and BCO.
I am a real sunbro, I love to help other people to clear the areas and kill the bosses, no matter if they are experienced or new players and there is only two ways I would finish: victory or death.
But I'm not going to help others to gank invaders, my game etiquete doesn't allow me to do that.

In the future, wait for an invader prior to crystalling out.Doelker wrote:To me it happened the opposite. Re: When you summon help......
^^ A darkmoon did. I didn't interfere in the fight ... I stood back.... Saw them fight then BCO.
It was obvious he wanted to gank.
He used the dried finger, seconds later. Darkmoon appears.

Re: When you summon help......
As a phantom, I serve the host like a slave, help as much as possible, and will happily stand in the line of fire. Not everyone plays that way, but doesn't that sound like fun to find me to summon? Never give up on summoning, you win some, you lose some. I summoned someone to help me with Gwyndolyn for the first time, when I got invaded, and, as I always do, get defensive, he crystaled out, GEE THANKS, I wasn't ganking, just, YA KNOW, invaded!? Ah whatever, not a lot of people are good co-oppers, but the Sunbro suggestion was great, look for them.

Re: When you summon help......
The only real one is to not just let your summon do everything. For certain enemies that are super dangerous like Havel, sure stand back. But at least for me, the only thing is I expect the host to not just watch me play the game for them.
The person you summoned that Crystaled out was probably a ganker that wanted to kill invaders instead of fight Gwyn.

That Warrior of the Sunlight page was really awesome. It really explained a lot to me when I was looking a few days ago.

This is the position most dedicated co-opers take (yes, we do exist). As others have said, the Kiln is a bit unique because there is a lot of PvP there, although many summons will still have the decency to help you against the boss. One option is to summon folks who have put signs down past the first knight or down at the boss gate, as they are more likely to be aiming for boss runs.
Dark Anor Londo is another weird one, it is often a ganker that summons you, but not always -- I get Gwyndolin runs there fairly often, and even had one that I was sure was ganking but it turned out he just had the bad luck to get invaded by both a DW and a DMB before I got there, and after we offed them he went straight to Gwyndolin.
You will also sometimes get people who black crystal back out because they were trying to sync up with a friend and you summoned them instead. It's nothing personal. As for me, I know how hard it is to try to summon help with all the summon failures you get, while knowing the clock is ticking on you getting invaded. So I always give my host as much benefit of the doubt about everything as I can.
