You'll need to install a mod to get the graphics up to 1080P...well not actually install it, just place a certain file in a certain folder....google it 
In order to get to the new content you'll need to rescue Dusk from the Crystal Golem in the Darkroot Basin, and place the Lordvessel in order to get to the Duke's Archives to obtain the broken pendant which is needed to enter the new content

back up your save games.
on XP the folder is C:\Documents and Settings\YourUserName\My Documents\NBGI\DarkSouls
with the next folder being your user profile. I don't know about any other OS.
And yes the Durante fix backs them up but I literally mean to archive them in a zip or rar or whatever. I don't know how someone can "restore" his backups.
