    Character builds from other settings.

Post by Siegfried. on Wed Sep 19, 2012 8:23 am

Pretty much what it says on the tin! I think we could have some fun with this, in part through multiple interpretations of the same character. No SL restrictions, no gear restrictions -- just what you think is characterful. I'll start off with the obvious and post some Lord of the Rings ones. Remember, these aren't made for pure effectiveness, but for characterfulness.

    Aragorn

Aragorn's a tough nut, but he's still human, ergo the relatively "low" strength score. I gave him Sunlight Blade to represent Anduril, which has more "called" power than constant power in the books. In fact, the books treat it like a sword that occasionally becomes a lightsaber, so that's where that's coming from. Wrath of the Gods is there to represent Aragorn's combat presence and his capacity to both deal with and demoralise a group of adversaries at once. No shield, of course, although he used one for a short period in The Two Towers. The armour and alternate equipment are all up for alteration, of course, but I think this ultimately represents the character pretty well.

    Boromir

This guy is just about as powerful as human beings get in Middle Earth. He's just a bother to actually take down, and I've tried to represent that here. Where Aragorn is a nimble, aggressive swordsman, Boromir is the better "tank", and said to be the heftiest member of the Fellowship. I was trying to think of a way to represent the Horn of Gondor, but nothing really came to mind, unfortunately.

    Legolas

In the books, this guy only has one knife -- the White Knife, and that's Priscilla's Dagger here. While he was a good warrior in the books, he wasn't nearly the best, and his skills are more suited towards survival in Mirkwood. His elvish advantages come through the choice of rings, which give him the capacity to move unhampered by poor terrain and increase his range with a bow. He's less a dedicated warrior on his own and more a part of the team's support, so he can't survive for that long.

    Gimli

The Fellowship's tankiest tank of all tanks, Gimli is based around not caring about getting hit and then dishing it back out. The build is similar in many aspects to Boromir, but at a lower level while still having superior defensive abilities. Gimli doesn't hit as hard as the human members of the Fellowship, but he's an exceedingly powerful frontliner.

    Gandalf

This guy doesn't feel right without both high faith and intelligence. Great Magic Weapon is there to represent his ancient elvish sword, which glows in the presence of dark servants (or just orcs, it's not quite clear). You could potentially give him any number of spells slots and spells, but I chose those ones based on stuff we see in the books and how he tends to operate in general, relying more on support than pure offensive power.

    Ringwraith

Why Gravelord Sword Dance? Well, they need the scream, don't they? Apart from that, I think the Dark Hand was too cool and characterful not to use. Same with the Black Knight gear, too, which is in line with their description in the books. Obviously, the Fellowship above would have one hell of a time trying to down these guys -- thus why they ran, presumably, and were only saved by a force of nature going "lolnope" to the wraiths.

Feel free to add your own and all that. Dark Souls provides us with some great opportunity for creativity, so let's see it, eh?

    Link (Ocarina of Time)

The most classic cosplay on Dark Souls, i like the armour combination because for me is the perfect combination of how link would gear himself in Lordran, the longsword represent the Master Sword, the knight shield represents the Hylian Shield, the longbow well... i dont think it need explanation.

    The spells:
    Din's Fire - Firestorm
    Farore's Winf - Homeward
Nayru's Love - Great Magic Barrier

    Dohvakiin Dragonborn

Pretty much standart starting gears from Skrim, plus the Fus Ro Dah looks awesome using the Emit force miracle lol!

    Jedi

The robes looks cool on a jedi, the great magic weapon + iaito looks like a Light Saber, and the force spell represents the force :suspect:

Finally someone else doing LOTR builds, as for your Aragorn build, i would probably remove the hood or rename him Strider, seeing as he goes by that name before anyone knows who he is, that being when he wears the hood(Y'know, if you'd want to go into more detail that is), otherwise, cool builds. I'll have to think of something before posting a build, i'll be back.

This is my idea of a Jedi build -- based more heavily on Faith, since the Faith stat is what resonates with both the Jedi's historical influences and their presentation. The Jedi way, after all, is considered a religion within the setting, and Faith-based abilities match up to it pretty well.

But have a Sith, too. Here.

Boromir's considered to be the toughest human being in that age of the world, ergo the excessive vitality stat.

Vitality is one of two stats that continue to make a decent contribution past their point of diminishing returns, but that's honestly besides the point. Plenty of those character builds in my post would be horrible for PvP or even PvE, but that's not the point -- they express the characters of The Lord of the Rings via the Dark Souls build system, and they have to be taken in context of what "Dark Souls: LOTR Edition" might look like.

The Lord of the Rings is anachronistic, but most of its historical influences are based on late Ancient-period, the Migration period and the early Middle Ages, with some more minor contributions from the High Middle Ages and Late Middle Ages. Ergo, a lot of gear in Dark Souls isn't necessarily appropriate for those builds; you wouldn't have kite-shaped shields or plate armour or advanced polearms. So a lot of LOTR-based characters, NPCs and enemies would be wearing variations on chainmail armour with some instances of basic plate, and largely using pretty basic weapons like daggers, single-handed swords, spears and axes.

Basically, these characters don't exist to be part of the Dark Souls metagame. They exist to be the characters they're based on, as though those characters still existed in their original context. That's why Legolas and Gimli are such low level builds for such important figures in the story; they were important members of the Fellowship for political reasons moreso than for their combat abilities, impressive as those might have been. But both paled in comparison to Aragorn and Boromir, so them being closer to SL70 makes sense.

There is, of course, room for interpretation. But that interpretation should be coming from the books and films rather than from the metagame of Dark Souls, because Dark Souls isn't necessarily the point of the thread. So I really encourage people to post builds that aren't necessarily that competitive or efficient, because a character from another setting will have different conditions and standards that apply to them.

Aragorn don't need no huge HP value; he's all about not getting hit in the first place and dishing it out instead. Also, see my post above.

Most of them are borked in PvP, I think. Aragorn can deal some hefty damage and Gandalf might work if you're a good caster and dodger, but the rest really fail to take complete advantage of their stats. Unless you're good with daggers, Legolas doesn't stand a chance and Gimli could stand to be better armed. Boromir doesn't use a shield with 100% damage reduction and doesn't get everything he could out of a broadsword.

Although I guess the Ringwraith is pretty ballin'. That said, it has enough equip burden left over to equip a zweihander instead of a Black Knight Sword, and it would probably be a far better option.

PvP isn't the point, though, as discussed above. If you want to make builds viable for PvP, more power to you, of course -- I'm not about to tell you what you can and cannot do. But as for the builds I provided, they're supposed to express the strengths and themes of the characters rather than strictly be as powerful as possible within the Dark Souls metagame, which is why Boromir, for instance, has so much vitality.
