Games that surprised you! (can be good or bad) Empty Games that surprised you! (can be good or bad)

Post by Dubscythe Mon Sep 03, 2012 12:10 pm

Describe some games that surprised you. Whether it was a game you bought on a whim that ended up being surprisingly good, or a game you were excited for that ended up surprisingly bad. Feel free to post as many as you can remember.

    Game(s) that were surprisingly good:

Dark Souls: This one I find kinda funny. I had only heard of Demon's Souls in passing and barely knew anything about it besides its extreme difficulty. When Dark Souls was announced my friend hyped it up and I tried it out. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the game.

Dead Space: Dead Space was always a game I knew about but didn't have too much interest in playing. In 2010 Gameinformer started covering Dead Space 2, and had a ton of articles on it the steadily increased my interest. A month before Dead Space 2's release I finally bought Dead Space and well... it's now one of my favorite games of all time.

    Game(s) that were surprisingly bad/disappointing:

Dead Island: As a fan of many zombie and open world games, this seemed like a game made in heaven. When I finally got my hands on it however, I was severely disappointed. It was horrendously repetitive and boring, and I couldn't bring myself to keep it more than 2 weeks. It's not often that I feel like I completely wasted money on a game.

Bioshock: I might catch some flak for this one. It wasn't as disappointing as some others because I only bought it for $10, but because it was so hyped up by my friends and everyone in general I had high expectations for it. I didn't feel like it was a bad game, but I couldn't really bring myself to complete it.

That's enough to get the thread started, so what about you guys?

Good: Trine 2, a little arcade physics platformer, recommended by a friend of mine who had played the first one. I thought I would play a few levels and be done with it but it's beautiful, entertaining game. Combat is a touch repetitive, but it's an arcade game, I can let it slide. Otherwise, it's a short game that I think everyone ought to try out.

Bad: CoD: World at War, I had liked CoD 4: Modern Warfare, but I just thought this game was an utter mess.

I didn't mind World at War all that much. It wasn't as good as 4 but it also wasn't complete and utter craziness like every game afterwards.

In general because I've been burned a few times I have trouble taking a dive on games I may not know about or that aren't in a franchise I like.

I agree with your Dead Island and Bioshock opinions.

Fable: Was one of my favorite games and I immediately bought the second one. I regretted it because it was just too odd being in its time in a Fable game and the gameplay wasn't very good. I bought Fable 3 in hopes that they would fix problems in F2 but somehow they made it worse.

Dark Souls: A long time ago I saw a video about an extremely scary game. Although I didn't know it I just saw a video of someone getting killed in Demon's Souls by one of the octo head guards in Latria. Later on xbox live I saw a video preview of Souls Caliber 5. The video showed multiple games and Dark Souls was one of them. Ever hear of "true love at first sight"? Well it happened. I loved the game the moment I saw it. I went online and looked at a few more videos, deciding that this was all I ever wanted in an rpg. I also joined this community before we even had this forum. I was able to buy Dark Souls a few days after release and started as a pyro. From killing the gargoyles to getting curse stacked in the depths, I loved every second of it and still do.

EDIT: Did I mention I watched 2 different lets plays of Demon's Souls to pick up on tactics?

Good surprise: Dark Souls. Rented it and brought it to my friends house on a sleepover since he recommended it. I had never heard of it before he mentioned it.

Bad surprise: Shadow of the Collosus (HD). I never played the original and my PS2, and I figured the HD collection would be worth it. N-n-nope. The controls are sloppy as hell and the gameplay is dated and counter-intuitive. Worst 30 pounds I've ever spent. I honestly don't understand the appraisal this game gets.

The art style is beautiful, the bosses look epic, mysterious, evil, and innocent all at once, and its minimalist storytelling is really moving to some. So, as a work of art it really is special.

Though, I agree that playing it, I just didn't find the fun in it. Don't know why, it seems to have so much right going for it, but I just didn't enjoy it. Shrug

Good- Never thought a game like Valkyria Chronicles would appeal to me....To hours in I was trying to defend my squads life where ever I could, cried when one character died, and was going on and on about the beautiful cut scenes. Also Tales of Symphonia, was skeptical when my mate said it was the best game ever. He was right. Oh and Paper Mario: The Thousand Year door. That was a lot of fun

Bad- Any Call of Duty game. Online was the only redeeming feature and that was packed with obnoxious mic guys going on about how big thier penises were. Also in hind sight. The sequel to Tales was pretty bad and so was Assassins Creed 2.

I never thought I would see the day when someone thought a CoD game was "surprisingly" bad, I figured it would be expected at this point.

On another note, I just picked up Singularity and it's a lot more fun than I was expecting so far.

Good: Dark souls - i always watched my brother play this game, and always watched him get pissed off at it (Lol), it interested me ALOT, so i told him to get it for me on my birthday, BEST DAY OF MY LIFE.

Bad: Marvel vs. Capcom 3 - Dont get me wrong i love the game, but it isint really, a full game. more of just an arcade game, some thing to play for an hour or 2 while friends are over. i expected a story mode AT LEAST, but that's ok i enjoy it well enough.

TRINE: I didn't think it would be so damn addictive.
Fable: Too shirt, not enough quests. Even with the expansion it got stale quick for me.
New Vegas: Less bad gameplay more the bugs and stuff that made it unplayable.

Bad: TES 4: Oblivion, Star Ocean 4, Bioshock, Shadow of the Collussus, Dragon Age 2

They were, not so much anymore. Haven't played as many really great new games since early current gen and ps2 era. As much as I like cod, it and halo's success have destroyed how many companies opperate, putting profits and mass appeal ahead of everything else.

Resisting that trend is one of the reasons I still respect FROM, among a few others. I'm so sick of dumbed down games that its kinda sad.

Good: Darksiders (the first one). One I missed on release but I read some good things on here about it so took a punt. I love it, playing it at the mo'. In fact it's the only game that's keeping me away from Dark Souls, which isn't as bad as it sounds because I needed a break.

Bad: Broken Sword-The Sleeping Dragon. Edge Mag raved about this and gave it a 9/10 score which was the same score they gave Metroid Prime. WHAT!!! I should have known better. I'd played the first two Broken Sword games & after that bloody goat in the first and throwing buns in a bush for hours in the second, I don't know why I thought the game mechanics would be better. They weren't and the characters were straight out of 'cliche central'. I still don't understand why Edge thought it was so wonderful.

There was this one game I bought spontaniously without knowing anything about it when I needed something to play while I waited Skyrim to be released. This game was Dark Souls.
After playing it through the first time I just sat there and realised:

"This was...the best game I have ever played."

Now 1000 play hours later I still remember that first playthrough as the highlight of my whole gaming history that I doubt will never be topped.

I was surprised at how much I disliked Skyrim. I got it a few months after release so I had plenty of time to hear the hype about it... So when I played it I was so disappointed. It sounded like it should have been my my perfect rpg.

I couldn't really tell you what it is about it that I just can't get over but something just really irks me. In fact, I still haven't completed it, though I intend to one day. :/

Surprising in a good way would probably have to be Mass Effect. I borrowed this game off my cousin and for the first two hours I wasn't particularly impressed but then I got into the swing of things with the biotic powers and I couldn't be seperated from that game for a good few weeks... Only by Mass Effect 2.

    Uncharted 3.

I'd heard of the uncharted series and knew a bit about it, but I'm not much into the shooters of this generation. I heard the game was full of cutscenes and was supposed to be a bit mindless when you play.

I was happily surprised by it. Rather than most games that just use cutscenes as really dull exposition, or cramming as much crap onto the screen during a battle, I was very happy with it. For all intents and purposes, Uncharted 3 reminded me of a really good action movie. It was very appealing, fun, and didn't bog me down. The puzzles were neat and simple, and could be solved pretty quickly but weren't as simple as pressing the right button. I enjoyed discovering answers flipping through the journal, and the characters were very well done both in how they are written and voiced.

It was a very good thing to me, as being a jaded cynic in regards to games I've almost swore off all modern generation games that are coming out, but Uncharted 3 has definitely showed me that some have a lot of possibility.

I saw this thread this morning before I left for work and though about it on my drive in.

    My Faves

Disgeae Series: I love these games. I have only officially beat 1 of them completely, but still they are great as long as you do not mind grinding.

Animal Crossing: I know, I know... but my wife and I played these together on our DSs and we had a lot of fun. I had peaches in my town and she had apples. big grin

Fatal Frame: I beat all of these and really enjoyed them. I loved the moody atmosphere and concept.

Actaully the list of games I like goes on and on...Gears of War, Dead Space, Mass Effect, SMT series, Darksiders, etc.

@Juutas: A similar thing happened to me. Dark/Demon's Souls ruined other games for me. I have tried some games that I know should be good, but they do not compare to the feeling of playing Dark/Demon's Souls. It kind of sucks.

@Tolvo: I agree about the Uncharted games. When I started playing 1 I thought I was going to be let down, but they are extremely well made games. I have only beat 1 and 2 so far.

That train level and how well designed it is in Uncharted 2, Naughty Dog still got it.

Animal Crossing is pretty fun, it's an ultimate time killer. Kind of like the Sims.

By the way it hasn't been announced but consider this Baal. Fatal Frame Wii-U. Using the tablet controller as an actual camera, and looking through something in your hands to see the ghosts.

Yeah, Animal Crossing is a different type of game. I think the reason I enjoyed playing it so much was because my wife was really into it and it made it fun for me. We would visit each others towns and hang out, give each other presents and make the town people say completely inappropriate things. lol.

I have not heard about the Wii-U Fatal Frame. I will check it out. I am almost certain I will not be purchasing the Wii-U though. I am not sold on the tablet controller yet. I read another article about it yesterday and the writer did not seem to have much positive to say about it.
