    Tank Busting

Post by IV_Mark_VI on Mon Sep 17, 2012 12:24 pm

So last night, I was fighting a guy in full havels, havel's shield, BKGA.

Trading blows was out of the question, and he just held his shield up and circled occasinoally swinging. That thing dead angles like a beast, so I found I would get hit often by strafing for BS's on him, and that shield/armour I can't trade blows with my build.

Parrying was an option, but good chance to get stunlocked if you miss...

Unsure what else. I didn't have any dung pies, that would have been an optoin. Maybe poison arrows.

He also was healing constantly... ideas? Maybe I was just tired, but I couldn't punish him well. The BKGA just has a ton of speed and reach. Normally I can poke people like that to death, but with the lag I couldn't bs him when he healed.

Anyways... looking for ideas for low poise tank busting in this scenario. If I had a great scythe or mura that would work I think with the dead angles. I have a falchion, and people say it dead angles like a beast, but I haven't been able to pull it off because of it's limited reach. Wondering how people dead angle with it?

With lag, parries are tough. Although I should be trying to parry a lot to get better... even if I die a lot.

The run right and hit R1, is that like running beside them and attacking?

In essence, it will work a lot to dead angle, you could also menu swap to a murakumo or great scythe to nuke em' down.

Yeah, I need to understand the mechanics of dead angling better.

I think it works like this:
Game calculates attack direction from the facing of the player initiating the attack and the player defending the attack.

So if Player X is looking north, and Player Y is looking south, then Player X can block player Y's attacks (even if player Y is behind them). So if Player Y is in front of player X, and turns his back to Player X and uses a weapon/spell that hits player X, it counts as coming from behind.

That's why I don't understand the 'running past attacking' bit, because it seems you would be facing their shield. Am I not understanding dead angling?

    Nooo, the running past allows your attack to equivalently get your weapon to hit their back whilst not being behind em' etc;

So... is it where the attack makes contact? I thought it was just the facing that was important.

It's where you're facing that matters. Certain running attacks just have a hitbox that lands from behind you, so it lets you score the hit a little after you pass them.

So do you run past, then look left/right or something? Because if you're looking north, and he's looking south blocking, wouldn't that mean the facing would block it?

The hit registers that it's coming from behind in that case. With a mura head on you have to twist the character around to get the hit through the shield, but running hits should register as a head on or side hit or back hit depending on when the animation starts.

Use pyro and bleed/poison effects on em. Or if you have a strength based weapon with enough patience you can eventually break their guard.

Or use lifehunt scythe. Any bleed up on yourself can be cured with red blossoms, especially if the opponent is just turtling and not playing aggressively

Or the painting guardian sword. Light, great scaling, bleed, and great when locked off.

PGS wouldnt have worked if the guy was turtling with Havels, it would've just deflected his attacks back.

Does the running attack beside them work because if they're locked on, they'll turn sideways and your front attack will hit their side?

If you get the timing right you'll hit them through the shield as they turn. Annoying as hell figuring the timing though.

swap to a higher poise setup (56 is good but the more the better) and fire tempest him if your build has the att for it, it will break his guard and depending on how many hits hit gets (2 or 3 is likely if he's turtling) it can deal upwards of 1500 damage per unblocked hit once his guard breaks, thats painful at best and fatal at any other time.
