Animations on Playstation complete faster than Xbox? Empty Animations on Playstation complete faster than Xbox?

    Post by IV_Mark_VI Wed Sep 19, 2012 1:41 am

Been playing both for awhile now, and I swear the action on the playstation is faster than the xbox.

    Can anyone confirm this?

    ...

    Its throwing off my timing.

Edit: and by action I mean the engine itself is running faster, animations are faster to complete.

What do you mean action? There are far more PS3 players than xbox players so invasions and co-ops are more common.

No, I mean the engine itself runs at a faster clock cycle it seems

Anyone know if there's any sort of stat tracking that tells what the ratio is for active PS3 players vs Xbox players?

I agree, I was having trouble parrying on the xbox when I used it for the first time. The timing confused the hell outa me >.<

Xbox pops more, ps3 has better darks and lighting.

Xbox has less frame jitter, sound is equal.

But the action just seems way faster on the PS3. I really need to test it.

Because of the already large amount of variance in the answers. I would start the assumption that like computers, it depends on the age of the devices, and other things like if you ever clean it or the amount of time you've used it and stuff saved and currently saved on it.

    Sound system:

    2 Energy Connoseur RC-70 towers (http://www.futureshop.ca/en-CA/product/energy-reference-connoisseur-4-way-tower-speaker-rc-70-black-single/10087359.aspx)

    Rears:
    RC-Rs
    http://forums.redflagdeals.com/expired-energy-reference-connoisseur-rc-r-dipole-surround-speaker-single-169-99-a-1072678/

No current sub; the towers provide enough bass and I'm in a condo. All sound is hooked up optical to a Higher end but older denon (AVR 2803). Sound is still great, little reason to upgrade it yet, even if it came out in 2003.

    TV: Pioneer Kuro KRP-500M

TV I picked up as a steal for 1500, with shipping/insurance was 2k (3800 locally).

All my sound stuff picked up half price, so maybe 2.5k on sound or there abouts.

huh.. i don't know my exact model, but it's a 1000 watt samsung home theatre system.. maybe that's the difference?

it trips the hell out of me tho man, i can hear the bells and whistles of the armor and the footsteps like behind me- drives me nuts on ps3. xbox just sounds really flat.

Eh well that's just power, not clarity.

Are you using analog hookups or digital?

The TV is top notch; many people still argue Kuro's are the best.

    Sound is entry level audiophile...

    Is this your system?

I don't buy it... so if we're on PS3s, and I have a new version and you have an old version, the action will be faster on mine? Giving me an edge? My CPU is faster so I swing faster?

No way. Systems have to be in synch, regardless of age. Would have to work off a clock cycle.

I do know even old ps3s cpus are way faster than the xboxs, so I'm assuming this is the reason.

Your statements contradict each other, you said that PS has a faster CPU and therefore may be the reason that its faster, but you disagree with different computers going faster because of age or time of creation?

I read you like Starcraft, remember when Day9 said that people with faster computers may load the game faster and get a second edge.

Plus, I wasn't just doing that comparison, I was using a broad statement, perhaps the xbox doesn't use an internet connection as well as the PS?

    It's not a contradiction.

An xbox at time of release and an Xbox released last week have different hardware, and different ages. Even though the new one might be able to run the game faster, it won't, because that would make no sense for a multiplayer game.

The load time is different than clock cycle, as that is harddrive dependant, and yes, that is true. A SSD put into your xbox and copying your games to it will make you instaload.

    I'm not talking about lag...

Ok, this is exactly what I mean:

Hollow winds up and swings on the xbox. Total time to swing: let's say 1.2 seconds.

On the playstation, it feels like 1.1 or 1.0 seconds for the same animation. Just slightly faster.

Do you understand? Honestly, not trying to be rude, but I program for a living and I'm not sure if I understand it myself.

An old C64 game on an emulator running off windows XP may not work properly because of clock cycle differences.

A multiplayer game meant for the PC running off of XP should run at the same speed for all computers, no matter if you have killer hardware or the bare requirements.

Loading screens aren't normally coded to be 'in synch' so any game that has a load up before you get into the game you'll have an advantage if it starts right away (Battlefield 1942). Some games implement a countdown to mitigate this (CoD).

The same game, on a different platform, could run at different speeds... it's not magic. I do need a way to test it though.

You asked for an answer and you've been given one and now you're telling him you don't agree because you don't think multiplayer online games would "allow" for that. Doesn't seem like there's anything to debate there.

Also, multiplayer games allow for lag... so y'know.

    Lag is unavoidable...

Have you ever tried a game meant for windows 95/98 and had to run it in "compatibility mode"? What do you think that is?

If the game is attempting to refresh the screen at 30fps, that means a call to the GPU every 30 ms right? Assuming they spooled off a separate thread for updating the GPU, and was kept in synch with the events, if the code isn't done every 30ms, then the GPU call will be delayed right?

Lag is unavoidable yet the idea of a system running slower because of age is foreign to you. K.

    Whee...

    Any programmers around?

This is how I understand they'd likely do it:

Have your main code in one thread and separate the calls to the GPU. Execute the rendering every 30 seconds, but have it in synch with the main thread.

Let's assume they aim for 30fps, so every 30 ms a call is made to the GPU. Because they want to squeeze every bit of performance out of this game, their models for each console and platform is different.

So if on one box, the cpu is overutilized, and it takes 32ms to render a frame, when the call to the GPU is made it'll look glitchy.

OS latency issues are negligible until you go down to the nano second or pico second level.

The faster the CPu, the faster they can update the GPU, if they want to tighten their model and up their utilization percentage. But to my limited understanding, that would just increase fluidity (which combined with good alias would make it seem really smooth). The only way the animations would actually be out of synch is if the models are different (my guess) or if the Xbox is always behind the rendering (doubtful).

It's also possible that their GPU calls aren't in a separate thread, but I really really doubt that.

It does appear that the xbox is frame dropping, but I'm fine with that.

Anyone have access to a dev kit?
