Never seen this before - counter backstab

Post by Brokewilly on Fri Feb 10, 2012 4:40 pm

Ok - this is the situation. I invaded a guy in the forest who I have fought many times before. I have only successfully beat him once (WoG'd him off a cliff) so I basically use him as yardstick to measure how much PvP experience I have gained .

When I first invaded he was basically done with killing a fellow FoC member 😢 with a Demon Great Axe but I notice he was NOT lagging from my prospective. As he changed up weapons (1st a Shotel, then a Bandit's Knife) because he probably knew I would be able avoid being hit with that weapon. As he starts to move towards me the lagging starts (that little teleportation stutter step).

Anway I successfully got a backstab on him:D but even before my backstab animation was complete this guy was behind me with that d$%# Bandit's Knife backstabbing me. I did not see him flip or move behind me but he was able to counter my backstab with another backstab.

Is this lag or is this an actual counter backstab technique?

There is a "counter-backstab" technique in certain situations, it often looks like lag cause it's so fast. Watch this video:

At 0:50 he starts talking about "counter backstabs"

Lag if the motion is predictable will not be noticeable to a user, ie. if I move in a straight path circling someone you will not see me lagging. It could be that the guy he was playing was predictable and thus you didnt see it.

With regards to your backstab flip it can be that the game on your side based on the info it had at the time thought you had a BS but when it got the latest data from the other player the timestamps showed he was before you.

I would think the actual lag in games are a lot higher than we think considering what kind of connection people are on and with no dedicated server environments. The only good setup atm is for someone with a really good line to host a match.

This lag issue is one of the reasons I think people want to reduce the BS hitbox, it feels like one is circling at a safe distance but in reality your opponent is actually closer than you think. Its also one of the risks of playing defensively, if you actually go for the BS quickly they will have less time to reposition.

Did you take damage? In laggy conditions, I believe you can both backstab at the same time, but neither of you should receive damage. You can also hit someone at the same time that they backstab, which also results in no damage during the bs animation.

I hate to say it, but this guy probably noticed the heavy lag and took out a bandit's knife anticipating a backstab fest. In that sense, this was a "strategy" of some sort, albeit the type of tactics that most of us would frown upon.

Yeah - I did take damage (it was the killing blow) - this counter backstab looked similiar to what is shown in the video Cracksouls provided. I don't know if it was the lag he was taking advantage of or if he was able to employ the technique shown in the vid.

Anyway, this dude is turning into my arch-nemesis:twisted: . Right now he is the teacher and I am the student but I will graduate one day:cheers: .
