Wait, Dark souls or any game?

DkS: Sif. No more words needed.

Everything: well, Breath of Fire 4 last boss is a huge nostalgia, as well Liquid from MSG1 and the Boss from MGS3... Special note to Warcraft 3 (yes, blizzard!) and the last bosses of both original and expasion campaign, Soul Calibur 3 Nightmare, Castlevania SOTN Dracula, Final fantasy 7

    Wait, I can't decide...

    1: Cycloid Emperor - Duke Nukem 3D/Forever
This fight is probably the most nostalgia inducing fight of any game for me, since I am an avid Duke fan.
    2. Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots - Liquid fistfight
    (****ing epic)
3: Zero - Duke Nukem: Zero Hour
    4. Turok 3: Shadow of Oblivion - Oblivion
    5. LoZ Ocarina of Time - Ganon
    6. LoZ Majora's Mask - Majora's Mask fight
    7. The Binding of Isaac - Mom's Heart
    8. Hexen: Beyond Heretic - Korax
    9. Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater - The Boss
    10. Jet Force Gemini - Mizar
Included this one because I'm still waiting to work up the time and skill to be able to get to the end of this game. Goddamn do I love me some Jet Force Gemini.

    EDIT: Oh Dark Souls wise.

    1. Gwyn - because emotional boss fight.

    DkS: The Four Kings...

Everything else: Taboo from Super Smash Bros Brawl. Why? It was the first boss I every remember fighting, it kept on killing me and my brother so many times that when we beat it. It was almost like killing the Kings for the first time (but better, much better)

I'm going to assume that since this is specifically in the Dark Souls subforum, you're asking for Dark Souls bosses. Ten's a lot, though, so I think I'll do five.

Ceaseless Discharge is a great boss if you don't use the built-in "out method". He deals such massive damage that the stakes are always high, so this is a boss that will test both your evasive skills and stamina management. It's also a boss that controls movement well -- he only does his most powerful attack at longer ranges, giving you incentive to stay close and dodge those tentacle slams. Clever.

As much as I feel guilty about killing Priscilla, her boss battle is pretty fun and creative, earning her the fourth slot.. Her turning invisible and leaving footprints in the snow gave the fight a bit of a random element, given how difficult it is to tell if she's winding up for an attack or not. And while her attacks are easy to avoid, they punish you pretty heavily for getting hit. This one might be higher on the list if it were more challenging.

Third place belongs to Gwyndolin. It's a very interesting fight because of the genre disparity at play; instead of it being an arena-based punch on like most boss battles, it's staged like a boss battle from the "bullet hell" genre of games, where evasive action against a battery of ranged attacks makes up the bulk of the fight. I think it was exceedingly clever of FromSoftware to mix genres like that, and it's a fun battle to boot.

In second place comes Gwyn, if only for the music and the "throwdown" nature of the fight. It's easy to parry him into an inferior game, but if you don't do that, there's an intense battle that pushes your stamina management skills to the limit.

For me, the number one battle is Ornstein and Smough. It's not the first boss (nor the last!) that has you outnumbered, but I think it's the most interesting and fun while offering a great deal of different playstyles to excel. I love how graceful the tactical setup of the fight is in terms of finding a solution; killing Smough first is the reverse strategy when compared to killing Ornstein first. Pretty clever! Killing Ornstein, of course, comes down to using his superior speed to separate him from Smough, but killing Smough first depends on using Smough himself as a shield against Ornstein's attacks. And then, depending on how you did it, the boss battle has a different second act. Brilliant.

Great post, man, and yeah, a lot of the boss battles play around with mechanics and different concepts for how the fight should play out. The gargoyles were based around using aggression strategically to make sure the first one was weak once the second comes out, something a new player doesn't really get or understand very well.

Sif is very good at avoiding your attempts to kite him. He has really fast dash attacks and great range. He also dodges you frequently so the strategy of "run backward until he whiffs then rush in and smack him" doesn't work unless you have perfect timing. He also breaks down anyone who doesn't use a heavy-duty shield because of his power and speed. He's really good at controlling the fight and forcing you to react to him, another fun battle.

The Gaping Dragon would be a really interesting and difficult fight if you couldn't exploit the trick of staying far away until she tries to crawl toward you and punishing her ridiculous recovery time. If you try to melee her, she does a good job of keeping you facing her, and has some really deadly and hard to dodge attacks. Solaire almost always gets killed in that fight unless you take her down fast, which says a lot.

O&S does a great job of testing whether you actually are building for anything or not. When I first fought them my stats were kind of random, and I got owned over and over again. When I fight them now, partway through a build, I usually destroy them, whether it be because I've invested in Dex or Str, or have a Divine+5, or magic, or whatever, and know whether I'm going to block or dodge, etc. They really force a first-time quester to think about what he ultimately wants to do with his character and start strategizing.

The 4kings is a true test of your skill, however. If you don't know what you're doing by that point, you won't survive them. You're not only on a timer, forcing you to DPS and rush the fight, but you need either superb dodging, tanking, or magic to deal with these fast and powerful enemies who gang up on you. It's an oppressive feeling as you become surrounded by these powerful enemies in the deep dark of the Abyss; safe to say, they control the fight no matter what level, weapon, or build you throw at them, especially in NG+.

Gwyn is a great fight as well, not so hard if you have a killer shield and spear combination, but trying to fight him mano a mano is a fun experience, and a real test of your ability. Of course, you could always take the low road, and riposte-punch him in the privates over and over with the Dragon Bone Fist.
