    foreign accents! Empty foreign accents!

Post by theycallmerico Wed Sep 19, 2012 11:24 am

I've started watching the second season of Game of Thrones, now that I've finally finished the 3rd book and feel like I won't be at risk of any spoilers.

Although the series isn't really a culprit, I noticed that films that take place hundreds, if not thousands of years ago, tend to use British accents. Well, it's either that or use subtitles, and I'm confident the general demographic of Americans don't want to watch a movie and read at the same time.

I understand that Roman Gladiators can't sound like they're from New York or Boston. That would just sound silly...

Is it just distracting to our British friends that they have British accents?

I'm not bothered myself. While I believe the British accent has more character to it, it also leaves much less room for the role of other characters such as said gladiators, and so the American voice is more suited.
