Shortcomings of the Duke's Archive shortcut

Post by AzureCrow on Sun Sep 09, 2012 9:14 pm

I recently managed this shortcut and realized that it not only skips the prison but in theory makes it impossible to ever enter it. My question is have any of the players who performed this shortcut to skip the first encounter and kill Seath been able to enter the prison after? I've a compulsory need to collect everything each run and would hate to loose the 2 miracles and firekeeper's soul. :mask-averice:

This thing is so annoying to get right that it wastes more time than it saves.

It's not really a shortcut, it's just a series of risky parkour moves off of elevators in Duke's that allows you to bypass invincible Seath.

And gets you killed 59 times as opposed to one.

It's better to drop off the right side if your goal is to quickly reach Seath. Also most people doing the shortcut aren't concerned with getting every single item anymore, it's just a faster way to beat the game for those in a rush. I must have gone through this game 50 times by now so I'm long past the need to loot every single item, every single time and I know many others are the same. You don't have to save Logan, he escapes after you beat Seath anyways so you aren't missing much. You can have all 7 firekeeper souls on NG, so by NG+ they're only really worth a few soft humanity. Also armor and rings are only worth getting once unless you really want to clog up your bottomless box.

That being said, most people will never be able to actually use the shortcut. Timing is difficult and you will likely die if you miss. However it is possible to quit out to the menu while you're falling and will be standing back at the top when you start back up.

It's cool as hell though, or at least to lesser mortals like me who've never attempted it.

Right, you have to open the prison door from the inside... But why would you even want to go there if the entire point of the shortcut is to skip the prison? silly

To think I would get a response from the mighty Vegeta! [swoons then feints]
I'm actually completely content with this shortcut frankly its rather brilliant however after seeing it linked to the wiki I thought players should be aware of the consequences of it. I managed to lose 93 humanity and about 900000 souls trying to get back to the first bonfire without warping out, I rushed...

The trick of this shortcut is realizing you don't have to immediately make the roll which dawned on me watching the link above after seeing vegeta's shortcut guide. [which is amazing] Vegeta probably makes the first frame capable of landing on top of the railing but you can stall a moment before the roll, it only took me about 10 min of tweaking knowing that, I did however spend around a total 2 hours on it lol!

Just knowing that this exists...I will HAVE to try it. Just like the shortcut to lower burg; it served no real purpose to me, but I HAD to try 15-20 times until I was able to do it...just so I could say I had!

That's pretty much the main reason anyone does them. Not because they need to, it's because they're just cool to see and pull off yourself. They're also pretty much required for speedruns, though most sane people won't ever seriously attempt one.

Hi Fellow DS lovers, Im in a bit of a pickle, Followed so called Super short cut vid and after about 30 attempts managed to pull it off. So got to the final bonfire before crystal cave (all good) then went to the crystal caves and got cursed by seath, had no purging stones, couldn't go human to get help with boss cos I was cursed so had to warp back to firelink shrine. I thought I could just buy some stones and warp back to the same bonfire at Dukes, but ohhhh no. Now I seem to be stuffed because I have had to get back to the first bonfire at beginning of the archives from Andor Londo warp bonfire, and well I just cant get the shortcut to work !! been trying the dam flip roll all day with no joy, and this now unfortunately seems to be the only way I can advance ???? HEEEEEELLLLLP I'M A CELEBRATY, GET ME OUTA HERE happy Look Skyward

What people do in your situation is they Homeward Bone back to the bonfire in the Archives (it's not a warpable bonny) after getting the materials they need. Your mistake was resting at a different bonfire.

And in case you didn't know, you didn't even have to leave the Crystal Cave in the first place. The clams before Seath drop Purging Stones.

if you must get into the prison, wait until logan goes hollow and let him kill you.
That entire room up there is coded to place you in the prison if one dies.

What if he goes up in the room, it's empty, but he kills himself up there with Power Within. Would that work?

    Yes it would work.
The room itself is scripted so that if you die, you spawn in the prison.

Ah power within, ok nice one. Just a thought though, now I've killed Seath and got everything I need bar slaying big hat and knabbing his gear, I now remember I forgot to free big Hat from Sen's fortress in the first place so maybe thats why he's not around at all. Or is it because I just stuffed up by doing shortcut and warping out ?
