The large club: an under-appreciated gem

Post by Azure23 on Sat Feb 23, 2013 6:26 am

was just tooling around with my leeroy build today and for whatever reason grant just wasnt cutting it. Decided to bring out the ole poison baseball bat that was my main before i picked up my blessed hammer up and proceeded to slaughter three gank sqauds in a row with it. I've always had a soft spot for this particular weapon due to its massive damage and low weight, but i was doing some experimenting and found several techniques that are particularly deadly with it.

the first is what i like to call the heavy delay hit, and its amazing for dealing with bs fishers and those pesky lightweights.
Now we all know how great the 1h r2 on that large club is, it hits fast and is hard to parry. I rarely see the follow up r2 in pvp though, probably because the recovery time on it can be deadly. This can be used to your advantage though, after you use the first attack, you have a massive window to hit the button again and have your character do the second attack. i experimented a bit to see how far it can be stretched, my character had regained a significant amount of stamina and actually shouldered the weapon when i hit the button, and he still executed that fast follow up attack. you can easily lure enemies in who see you defenseless after the first attack and surprise them with the delayed second attack. works like a charm

the second is a simple unlocked 1 handed roll attack, i found you could change the direction of the attack halfway through the animation, essentially resulting an a 360 degree covering sweep attack, very useful for those gankers who just won't quit. this attack comes out quickly and hits hard, what more could you ask for?

I saved the simplest for last, as you all probably already know this, but ill mention it anyway. The 2h rolling attack on greathammers is amazing, unparryable and almost always poise breaking, this attack has been discussed to death. i found a simple variation on the standard can be very useful against opponents who really want that backstab. roll in, unlocking mid roll, chances are they're trying to circle around for the bs, hit the attack, and move your stick backwards so that you do a 180 when executing the attack. If you timed it right and they werent too close, they just got a face full of hammer.

these tricks are great for dealing with backstab fishers and gankers, every heavy's worst nightmare.

I'm actually scared to go back to the Forest since I haven't been there since the mass invasion and I saw what it did to my dueling.

Well... I guess i have now seen it all. I just encountered a ps3 hacker. Surprise surprise, in the forest. I was hosting and he was a red invader.

It was not lag, i chainstabbed him a few times and he didn't die. Connection was fine. We had a short discussion after the "duel" and he said he has "around 65k life" and that he "busted his *** off to do it" (hack ps3). Meh. I don't even know what to say. If you're interested, i can pm you his psn id.

Well, I knew it was possible to hack a PS3 save file but the lengths this guy had to go to do it is just ridicoulus. He had to be very knowledgable of encryption, hashing, etc. That guy was dead set on figuring out a remedy for his fear of getting beaten HAHAHA.

Ok people - I have a question. What type of damage does the shockwave from a Dragon Greatsword inflict? Is it magic (the weapon description mentions "mystical power"), physical or lightning?

Thanks in advance for any input.

Wolf - thanks. I was fighting a dude a few days ago in the Burg and got hit by it (not dead center though) and I was able to block it without much damage with a Mag +10 R/W Shield.I think my stamina was pretty high so no guard break - I thought I was done for cheers .

Meh. My external hard drive died and i lost like 50% of my recorded pvp including almost ready drake sword invasions vid, some forest invasions and all of the meowcenary challenge footage. Dammit. Well, I still have a lot of forest pvp footage on my laptop so maybe i should put something together from those clips. Haven't uploaded anything in a while.

In other news, are you guys still doing forest invasions? I haven't been there very much in a while. I've enjoyed regular invasions, duels and co-op a lot more lately.

What do you have in mind? A str build? winking I can help you with the gear if you get rss. We could also co-op up to painted world (to rss) to make it more interesting.

Yeah, it gets repetitive. DWGR nerf and DLC changed the forest a little bit though. More low poise gankers and mid rollers.

Man I know how u feel about losing footage.I keep raw vids on external USB drives so if I lose a computer my stuff is safe unless the drive craps out but that hasn't happen yet.

I've been doing mostly hosting and invading outside of the forest. I'm going to do a weekend of just forest invasions now that my DM's arsenal is complete twisted . The last time invaded forest was into a 3v1 with one of the whites running around with a modded zwei - it was ridiculous. But nothing is like the forest in intensity so u have to love the place.
