    The Intro and Gods

Post by Nurgle523 on Sat Sep 08, 2012 3:58 am

Watching the intro, I'm sure we all notice a lot of in game locations. It gives us a lot of information that after playing through even half the areas, you get a better appreciation for what it says and DOESN'T say. I realize this is probably discussed before and I don't claim to have found anything new.

Now I am mostly analyzing the intro more than anything but to be safe anything in game I am going to enclose in spoiler tags just for the heck of it.

It tells about several beings and things, and while it does talk about them, there is a lot not said. As a quick example, [non-canon, not in game or even speculated by anyone] It doesn't say the Pygmy is the first-born son of Gwyn. Which may or may not be true, and is just an example non-relevant possibilities that could be true but is not stated. IT IS A SILLY EXAMPLE TO DEMONSTRATE MY POINT.

    A spoil-y example would be
    Spoiler:
That Anor Londo is really dark and the sun is an illusion there.. it doesn't say that in the intro but that is a fact.

Anyway, it's pretty clear [from the intro even] that the Gods were at best simply powerful beings that used "the flame" to become Gods. [However you want to word that, or define any of those terms.] Think of the Morrowind canon on the Tribunal to see the sort of angle I am taking here.

They both have an orthodox 'church', a truth that leads to what is considered heresy [spoily example above], etc. And from my person opinion, were likely HUMANS before becoming at all powerful. For example the intro does NOT mention the battle using epic powers until AFTER saying they discovered the flame. It does show them in some stature but definitely nothing that is canon-impossible for your character to achieve within the limits of possibilities. That is, until after they find the flame.

    Spoiler:
Plus why would they want so badly to extend the age of fire? If they were gods in their own right they would not need such a thing.

The Dark Lord ending really highlights this even more somehow. Kaathe calls it the age of humanity. No more gods, right? Also, in Deus-Ex game style, everybody has an angle and if Kaathe calls it the age of humanity it's because with the flame extinguished there are no Gods to challenge them.

    ON the topic of Intros......

Honestly this is a trivial thing but I never noticed this until ENB's lore vids..... but hell Anastacia appears in the trailer caressing a 'dead' knight marked with the Dark Sign.... now whether or not she is capable of branding someone with the Dark Sign thus passing on the curse I dont know.

But yeah thats something I simply never knew or saw..... its been such a long time since I actually watched the intro.

And in the name of nostalgia Ill link it below.

Thanks for linking the intro viralensign_ .. I hadn't considered that for some strange reason.

That's a good point, she is in the intro and the person always made me wonder who they were. I mean, what the heck was she doing out of the cage anyway? Maybe thats why her tongue was removed. Maybe he [the buried guy] comes back to life from the darksign and is the one who saves the player character/etc?

Was that anastacia in the video? I had never noticed that Viral ill have to watch it again. Anyway i agree that the first flame is the source of all power. i think Gwyn claimed the ultimite soul which he shared with some other primordial humans. they became powerful enough to be defined as gods (his soul description shows he gave at least some of his power to the other gods). The witch of isilith also claimed the flame which seems to have given her control of fire. Some of this power she may have shared with her daughters. Nito also claimed a soul and appears to have gained the ability to reanimate corpses and create diseases. The pigmy who all serious lore hunters should now know the name of gained the dark soul. Note how in the video it doesnt show him changing his appearence. Also note how he doesnt join in the war against dragons (comes into my theory later). It is my beleif that the first 3 souls have finite amounts of power. Notice how when the pigmy reaches the fire its much smaller in size.

The gods i think use their power directly as miricles thus slowly seem to be working their way through their power. the Witch and co dont seem to use theit souls power directly and instead used its power to help them develope primordial pyromany which was more like fire sorcery.Modern pyromancy wasnt created until the Bed of Chaos was created and so i think the early pyromancy was the (now lost) fire sorcery. Anyway after its creation (which will have used up some of the soul) the fire sorcery doesnt seem to have drawn directly from the soul so its power remained until the witch accidantly used it to create chaos. Nito i think used his soul directly too hence his powers he can give you are miricles.

Miricles appear to draw not from the power of the mortal but from the patron god. this is why you cant use Gvere's miricles without being in the princess guard (yes i know the Gvere you see is an illusion) or sunlight spear without being a sunbro. The miricles drawing from Gdolen and Nito you can use without being in their covenants but bear in mind you must have been in the covenant to get the miricles so you use of them is prehaps allowed for services rendered.

So picture it. with the power of the flame everywhere the isn't much dark (this is all in a metaphoric sense). Therefore the dark soul is less powerful and the pigmy can't do S. but as the power from the fire souls is used up the dark soul get's a little bit stronger. and stronger etc. The gods and the witches try to relight the flame but when you're burning ashes you get diminishing returns.

Anyway you should by now have an idea of what i'm trying to say. Watch the intro and most of what i say will seem plausable.

After making a few comments in the “I know where Velka is!” thread I had to pop in here just to pose a quick question to you guys. With all this talk of any hidden or straight forward meaning in the intro, do any of you have thoughts on who you think is speaking during the intro? I’ve thought (with no evidence obviously) for the longest that it could be Velka. Not that it would change to many things but there could be some meaning there. Thanks for your time and interesting posts guys.

Could be her could be a random person. I am flummoxed and confunded by velka entirely. Everthing i think could be something to do with her conflicts with itself. My logic is stuck in an impossible loop where the result is 0 + 0 = 1. And as anyone doing A-level maths (or indeed went to primary school) can tell you. that is not possible. The only thing i am certain of in regards to velka is that she has some connection to the painted world as thats the only place where her items (save what you by of her pardoner) can be found.
