    Exiled King Jeremiah

Post by Slarg232 on Fri Sep 07, 2012 3:42 pm

Hey guys, so I was semi paying attention in my World History class today and the name Jeremiah came up with the Torah. Torah being the Hebrew Text, and Hebrews being the people who are constantly exiled throughout their history.

Looking at Xantheous King Jeremiah, he is famous for being exiled, shares the name with the Prophet/King/important figure. I think this may be a connection, but other than his name we didn't go into depth with Jeremiah, so I don't know anything about him sad

Well he invades the player in the Vlad the Impaler area. The fact that he invades there can't be random, but intentional. Vlad the Impaler was exiled, imprisoned, and was assassinated. He was married twice and his first wife commited suicide by throwing herself into a tributary.

Well we can assume Jeremiah was simlair to Vlad due to the cruelty and his armor (I forgot the details that has, but someone can post something about it!). He was exiled to the Painted World and trapped there (even though he has an exit and that is where we assume he dies). Ironically the way out of the painted world is somewhat similair to how Vlad's wife died. Speaking of wives he found his second wife while he was in captivity. So perhaps Priscilla then?

....Sorry Lifehunters Priscilla has already been taken.

Well, many of the names in the game seem to be references to real people or characters from other franchises (Witch Beatrice, Rickert, Havel, Ornstein, and so forth) so it's possible FromSoft got the name from the source you mentioned.

Jeremiah and Priscilla together... would be like a teaspoon in a bucket, if you know what I mean. :mask-averice:

Japanese usually take alot of influenses from the real world and mix them up. Its classic. I think it pretty cool that they dedicate so much more time to their stuff to make is as cool, intresesting and awesome as possible

I can't say i think its likley that P & the X king were ever an item but the logic for Jera being cruel is his notched whip.

Heya, going to make this my first post here. Just found the forums and breathed a sigh of relief, since I can chat about this stuff for hours.

The name "Jeremiah" is really intriguing because Jeremiah is regarded as a prophet in not only Judaism, but Christianity and Islam as well. He's the author of the Book Of Jeremiah, 1st and 2nd Kings, and The Book Of Lamentations in the Christian Bible. According to Wikipedia, "About a year after King Josiah
of Judah had turned the nation toward repentance from the widespread
idolatrous practices of his father and grandfather. Jeremiah’s sole
purpose was to reveal the sins of the people and explain the reason for
the impending disaster (destruction by the Babylonian army and
captivity),“And when your people say, 'Why has the LORD
our God done all these things to us?' you shall say to them, 'As you
have forsaken me and served foreign gods in your land, so you shall
serve foreigners in a land that is not yours.'" God’s personal message to Jeremiah, “Attack you they will, overcome you they can’t,” was fulfilled many times in the Biblical narrative, Jeremiah was attacked by his own brothers, beaten and put into the stocks by a priest and false prophet, imprisoned by the king, threatened with death, thrown into a cistern by Judah’s officials, and opposed by a false prophet. When Nebuchadnezzar II seized Jerusalem in 586 BC, he ordered that Jeremiah be freed from prison and treated well."

The name Jeremiah itself means "Yahweh (God) will raise" This is extremely interesting because, as a lot of people who have played Japanese RPGs will attest, game devs love to take names and stories from religious mythology and turn them into characters, items, enemies, and the like. Is it possible Jeremiah has been exiled falsely from his land? Or maybe his weapon, the Notched Whip, gives us a little insight into his exile? I believe that Jeremiah has been exiled by his people through a coup. He was possibly the cruel and violent leader of some oppressed nation, probably employing quite a bit of torture. The Notched Whip itself seems closely based on the Cat Of Nine Tales, which was used frequently as a disciplinary measure. I think he may be in some way more than just a normal hollowed undead, since he was locked within the Painted World. There's no telling what he did or was capable of doing, but because the vestments of Velka are also within the painted world, it wouldn't be unfeasible to think that he may have been a follower, although that is unlikely. His exile may also be related to undeath. Becoming undead may have been unheard of in the land he hails from, and possibly he was shunned as a monster for rising after death, covering his fetid face, all too much resembling Jack Links. I still need to think out WHY he was in the painting, though.

*Edit* I forgot to touch on his title, Xanthous. For something to be Xanthous is for it to be yellow. To be called "yellow" is common slang in English speaking languages for being cowardly. His Exile may have come about from showing some sort of humiliating fear. Maybe he once had the power to dethrone Gwyn, but was for some reason unable to muster the courage to carry out the act, instead being seized and made a laughing stock, damned as a pariah?

I think the gods want what's best for the gods. They live in a city isolated from the rest of the world, with the only way of access by normal means being through a fortress filled with deathtraps.

And yes, I think the forum is quiet as well.

There's been some talk of Ol' Jeremiah before. As for cruelty, Priscilla is convinced it's a peaceful world (it's not). So what's the deal? Whips aren't good traditionally against armor, so those fleshy guys were likely former prisoners that Jeremiah wasn't too nice to. Also, he uses Chaos pyro, those guys use pyro. One seemingly escaped and is hiding (from what now? Hmmm....) and when he dies he passes on a pyro. The suggestion is that the pyro that came to the painted world is able to be passed along. So from Jeremiah to the painted world and so on? Xanthous is also a synonym for "yellow." The King in Yellow is a character in a few short stories by Robert Chambers (here). I can't take credit for that (I forgot who pointed out these stories) but I have read them since learning of this and the King in Yellow is a supernatural being whose sign and influence essentially make people go mad. The characters who are influenced by the King in Yellow have all read a play by the same name. So basically they're "drawn in" to a story about the king and go mad. The very brief references to the King don't portray him as a very nice individual. As his influence is generally limited to those who have read the play he is essentially in exile.

EDIT: How not nice is the King? Make sure to scroll down on the Wikipedia link. The stories influenced Lovecraft himself into borrowing some of Chambers' ideas. Some of the reimaginings discussed in the link there might also explain a good deal.

That's an interesting connection: The idea that Jeremiah caused the denizens of the painted world to go mad.

I've always thought that the fact that it was a painting was important. Paintings fade over time, perhaps the world itself decays as the painting does. Maybe Jeremiah is the force of decay in Ariamis, where the sun would be the force of decay to the actual painting. Maybe Priscilla is unaware that the world is changing; she's very isolated from the rest of the area, with several guards.

Maybe he was sent by Ariamis to protect Priscilla. He has Chaos Pyromancy too, so he must be linked to Izalith, Quelana, Quelaag or Salaman. Or the Xanthous Crown may be a worn out Monk's Robe off Demon's Souls, as that gave the wearer power, but made them lose their mind, which resulted in his exile.

Some say he is Salaman...didn't Quelana mention something bad happened to Salaman? "The flame consumed him." Was the phrase.

Naa thats just people trying to bring all the mentioned only characters into the game. Let us not forget how pyromancy was created - when fire sorcery was warped by chaos in isilith. Also salaman visited quelana many many years ago. i think he brought pyromancy to the great swamp.

I always thought he was some kind of reference to "The King in Yellow" stories. The concept of despair seems to fit the Painted World pretty well so his presence there would be perfectly understandable.
Someone else recently mentioned that he's a reference (like several other aspects of the Painted World) back to Demons' Souls, but didnt bother elaining it any further...

I first thought the Xanthous king was the Izalith brother but then the debs stopped that idea in its tracks. Now I think he's Salaman. He's the ONLY other NPC's besides the Izalith sister to be able to use pyromancies, CHAOS pyromancies as well. When Quelana said "Consumed by the flame" I think it was his lust for power in the pyro sense that lead him to his demise. He was EXILED for a reason, a reson which we do not know, maybe he was one of te undead to make it to Anor Londo..... Maybe not.

IMO he has major relevance to the lore.
