    If a Human drank estus...

Post by JohnnyHarpoon on Tue Aug 28, 2012 5:25 pm

You think, if a living Human (not undead) took a swig of estus, it'd basically just kill them?

    I do.

    What's your reasoning for that?

Technically speaking, the undead ARE alive.

Eh, I think if they were alive, they'd be alive. Undead in my mind is a specific distinction that, while the person isn't dead, they are most certainly not truly alive, either. In Dark Souls, I can see how the distinction becomes blurred, because when in Human form you actually resemble/act/think like your normal Human self, but ultimately the undead curse has you marked, and your existence is undeadness no matter how you swing it.

And I mean, my thought mostly stems from Dungeons and Dragons, purely on the basis of things that heal the living damage undead, and things that heal undead do harm if applied to the living. At least, energy-wise.

Even by D&D rules, the undead are alive. They breath (they can drown), they bleed (their heart shouldn't pump), and they are affected by poison (see bleeding). The only logical explanation is that "Undead" actually just means that they are cursed to not be able to actually die.

Basically, think of Jack from Doctor Who / Torchwood.

I imagine it'd be something similar to drinking this:

Well, what be estus? tranlated, it literally means heat. Where do you refill the flasks? At bonfires. The undead are 'chugging' fire from the bonfire to heal themselves.

Mwhahaha. More evidence that the Dark Lord ending plunges the world into an ice age.

Less it creates an age of Humanity. Take it as you will.

Hey, I got a few of the lore pinch hitters to agree that the sun and the flame are linked. Both are said to be fading, so what happens when one goes out?

I've yet to see proof that the natural sun is fading.

It's not much, but a whole lot of the lore is built on "not much".

I'd like to point out that it may be more metaphorical, with 'endless nights' being a sense of dread.

But if you want to take is serious, atleast in Lordran which is some unknown distance in the north, it may be an example of polar days and polar nights.

It could be an example of one of those, although I personally feel it isn't. The forest has deciduous trees (not coniferous), which would likely not grow that far north.

I can't really argue with the metaphorical aspect, although I personally believe it was meant more literally.

The metaphor 'endless night' rings alot louder for me, LOTS of jokes at the expense of my name and a certain book.

Interpreting things literally is actually quite important, in my mind, especially when it comes to art.

Now, I don't want to being a 'videogames as art' debate (Ebert is wrong, though), but interpreting things literally, in my mind, is always your safest bet.
