Spear user for PvP - SL70 + SL120

Hey guys,

I cosplayed an Ornstein build and.. loved it. I hated the spear at first, but once I got used to it, found it a powerful tool. I just had to realize that the DWGR is necessary, and learning range was necessary.

So I'm debating making an actual spear user for PvP. The first question is... what spear?

The ones that first come to mind are Pike, DragonSlayer spear, and Demon spear. I hear great things about the demon spear but I hate the way it looks. Is the vanilla spear or winged spear good? What about the Partizan, or Silver Knight Spear?

Looking for some suggestions! What spears have great range?

Without input, I'd likely go for the Pike. The partizan looks promising, and the Silver Knight Spear as well though.

Silver Knight Spear with Leo Ring.

Buffed pike is a freaking beast, personally like partisan the best but you should just try all of them and see which one you like best.

Wouldn't your build change for the different spears? Such as faith for the DSS, or planning on a Buff on a spear that can be buffed?

Silver Knight spear is an option for sure.

You could always go with a warrior build and them all will hit hard

I like the winged spear, but it depends on your stats. The pike is very good, but it eats up stamina compared to the other spears and has a high Str requirement. The Silver Knight Spear is a great weapon as well, it boasts superior range but with less damage than the winged. The Demon's Spear is weaker but has the best range in the game and puts pressure through shields.

Silver knight spear with pyro off-hand is such a great combo of speed, range and power. One of the most difficult things to fight against

Partizan. Not as long but it has a good moveset. I wanna see if you could dead angle with that thing >_>

I've tried all of them in PVP except the Silver Knight Spear. Pike is my favorite, partly for its extra reach (at least compared to the other standard spears), but mostly for the added thrill of trying to land a solid running attack with it.

How come the DWGR is required, btw?

DWGR helps keep your distance and manage spacing better. Fast roll works too, but spears can get a bit hefty.

Ok. Wishing to create a SL70 spear user.

Goal is for no holds barred PvP. So, automatically with the lowish level I'm debating going elemental spear. The demon spear seems to rely on STR/DEX too much.

Thoughts: I have only really used the DSS and the added range means I'll need to practice this one quite a bit. Unsure how it will affect my fighting. Also, the high vitality without RoFaP or MoM means I'm not making the most of it. I just hate MoM though, and Leo Ring is really good on a spear build. Not sure if Rofap would be better, but DWGR is a must and sometimes I want the wolf ring if it looks like the weapon they're using could stunlock me.

The other build would use an elemental partisan. Both these builds I'm debating using the silver knight shield and adjusting armour accordingly so I can better turtle and poke, but the added 2 weight and loss of stamina regen I'm not happy with. Grass Crest seems good enough.

Thoughts?

There are more efficient armor setups, but that looks solid. You're damage will be crappy, but you strike from low orbit so it shouldn't matter too much

Also leo ring affects physical damage only, so you won't get a significant damage boost from the lightning spear.

Yeah, the armour for builds I never spend a ton of time on, just tweak it when I get there. I hate the face masks, and I have to be happy with how I look, so this is just an example.

So which has better range? Winged or Partizan?

They are both the same I think, but the winged's R2 is a very long thrust while the partizan's R2 are horizontal swipes.

Normally I 2H my spear, and poke from a distance. If they're pushing hard, I may turtle to punish them, and if they try to BS me, I counter BS. But normally I do not R2 with a shield.

If the range is about the same, I'll likely try both on this build. The winged spear needs more stat investment and lacks a sweep, but at this point I don't know the effectivness of a spear sweeping attack. It does such low poise damage I can't see it staggering, and if I'm not facing the person that generally means they're going for a BS.

Having said that, I hear that the sweeping attack from the Silver Knight spear is just top notch. Thoughts?

@Pirate: that's the exact build I just put up. I think the link didn't work.

Big hat, Giant chest and hands, maiden skirt. I'm not aware of an armor setup that has better total defenses than that.

Ok. Making a build for a SL120. Same as with the rest of this thread, it will mainly feature the spear. I think I'll try the Silver Knight Spear.

Ring of Favour and Protection could swap out for DWGR.
