Fog Gate Question. Empty Fog Gate Question.

Post by PolarisStar Sat Aug 25, 2012 6:42 am

    Hello again,

Does somebody know why are there fog gates that lead into nothing in the game? For example at Sen`s at the first boulder ramp, or nearby the Undead Parrish (and I`m forgetting others now). We all know fog gates have a gameplay function (to tell you there is a boss fight coming, not to let you escape from the fight, and not let you into certain areas until you have gotten the Lordvessel). But then why put fog gates where there is not a boss behind it. My "hidden meaning" radar is reacting, but haven`t been able to put my finger on it yet. Any takes?

I can think of 3, sens, undead parish, the depths. I think they are there to keep you on your toes, if every fog gate had a boss behind it, there would be no surprises. By adding additional fog gate you never know what's behind it... 1st play through of course.

I agree that it is to keep you on your toes. But still, there is something about the presentation ("Traverse the white light"), that tells me there`s more to it than a play on expectations.

BTW, when you first go the Seath`s in the cave, there is no fog gate. I have no clue why.

Its because Seath isnt there yet. He has to arrive.
The fog gates are there to trick you. Look at the first one which leads to nothing. Then the taurus one, which appears to lead to nothing. You think you are safe but nope. You could be right about it having a greter significance considering the golden fog gates though.

Yes, that makes total sense (about Seath`s), thank you.

The fog gates separate the lvl into summon and invasion areas. When you drop a sign and cross into another area the sign will disappear.

They are there to trick you, as well to let you know you have entered a new area. Generally they tell you, "Hey this is a point where you better be at full health." Sort of a warning that you may die soon. As well they let you know if you will be able to move through the area if there is an invader. Generally their design is pretty simple with some variety, nothing much to them but still a nice part of the game. A thing mostly for the player to mentally note.

"Different area, more danger, possible boss, possible invaders, possible bonfire."

I thought they were there also to like load the area.
For an exemple, once when I was pvping at burg, I went to where the wooden shield is to wait the host finish his fight with other person. There I looked to the lower burg and noticed that when I'm on the corpse I can see a fog gate before the torch enemies that doesn't exist. When I walk to somewhere else, I don't see the fog anymore

I'm guessing they are there not only for trickery purposes, but also to serve as "boundaries" for multiplayer purposes. An example being, if you're trying to invade and you cross an area where a fog gate used to be, it says "invasion cancelled". Same thing with putting a summon sign down.

There are also many other fog gates other than the 3 mentioned. Come to think of it I'm pretty sure all "main" areas have at least 1 fog gate that does not lead immediately to the boss.
