Ash Lake Music Question. Empty Ash Lake Music Question.

Post by PolarisStar Sat Aug 25, 2012 5:21 am

    Hello everyone,

Maybe somebody here has figured it out, so I want to ask:

Why is Ash Lake the only area besides Firelink with a musical theme? Shrug

Firelink is your central hub, your place to rest, and the game rewards you when you get there with a beautiful and relaxing theme. The other areas of the game have what you would call "ambience sounds", but not music (I can`t wait to buy my surround system to dig deeper into that...).

There has to be something really special from a lore perspective about that place. Yes, I know the history of the place, but can`t tie it to the reasoning behind the placement of the music. These guys from From Software are real artists, and not a stone (or a musical theme) is set by chance on this game.

    Thoughts? Praise the Sun

It's tough to say, but it does possess a few features that makes it significantly more important lore-wise for various reasons.
It is the lowest point in the world of Dark Souls and it's home to the Everlasting Dragon, which I believe is the only surviving dragon in the game. It also possess the only bonfire that is currently impossible to put out due to a lack of a fire keeper and since it is always lit.
There is something special about the area indeed, but I am not sure why they gave that area music specifically.

I should of been more specific. He is the only what I would consider "True Dragon" left.
Seath is scaleless and requires his special crystal to replicate the ability of the dragon scales, so in a way, he isn't complete dragon by the way the game describes it. The gaping dragon isn't so much of a pure blooded dragon. Before devouring the plague and disease that comes to the depths and into blighttown, perhaps the Gaping Dragon was a real, pure dragon. In a quote from the great hammer received from chopping off it's tale, it says "... of the Gaping Dragon,
a distant, deformed descendant of the
    everlasting dragons."
It has everlasting dragon blood, but it is a fairly faint connection. The deformities of the dragon also caused it to lose the true potential of the dragon scales. Since we can damage and kill the dragon, it isn't everlasting, therefore it isn't really a "true" dragon.
The Everlasting Dragon in Ash Lake is the only true Everlasting Dragon left in the world. These were the very dragons that took the combine might of Gwyn, Nito, Seath, and all of his other allies to defeat them and that's what makes this dragon so significant. This dragon is also not hostile to us, which is extra strange and significant! The dragons hate our kind, but this one allows us to remain in it's presence and even will associate with us.

EDIT: I haven't looked at any of the new DLC and that is currently disregarded right now for my argument, as I know nothing of it and refuse to spoil anything for me except the new weapons and armor that I may run into.
You may have a point, but it could also just be another drake. We'll have to see what other info comes out in the meantime.
Forgot to mention, yes, I also agree that Ash Lake is very very special. That's just one more reason for them to give this area a song specifically.

@OP Only main place with music other than firelink? What about the Princess' Chamber and the Chaos Servant area? They've got music, too.

Also, +1 spur for putting the spoiler in a spoiler box! Like what you're supposed to do!

Typically, I've never noticed it other than at Firelink and Ash Lake XD I've never spent enough time at the other areas to remember there was music there!
Ash Lake isnt safe though, as we have the hydra and the crabs until you get to the Everlasting Dragon.

those are all major lore locations/covanent locations... even firelink has the way of white... the only cov areas without music are the gravelord cov, the dm cov (if you don't count gwyndolins boss music(it is his the music tracks they gave away listed it as his theme even if the buterfly shares it),) oh and the dark wraiths don't get music either

Yes, but they are not area music, they are character music, not the same case as Ash`s.

So the covenant locations really isn't valid then, since it doesn't apply to all the covenants. Major lore makes more sense for Ash Lake.

EDIT: Good point Polaris. Their music starts once you are near the character. Ash Lake's music starts when you get to Ash Lake.

I'd say there are songs where "good" covenants are located, by saying "good" covenants I mean those with no invasions, as the dragon covenant is not actually invasion based.
On the other hand, I don't think firelink shrine is related to the way of white, the covenant in firelink shrine seems more something secondary relating to the soundtrack there. Maybe it's because it's the first place you get when you arrive at lordran and it links to kiln

The Dark Moon Blades are technically good, however. They invade people that have sinned by doing evil things, like invading a player or kill the innocent Gwynevere or Gwyndolin.

Apparently i didn't understand your post. Sorry.
Also, i don't think that the dragon in ash lake is a fully evolved everlasting dragon. More like a hatching.
I don't think that anything we already know will change in the DLC, just that we get to know more.

You could be right, he isn't that large for a dragon.
Yeah, I agree, the DLC will give us more knowledge to add to our already expansive knowledge base.
