This build needs a weapon! Empty This build needs a weapon!

Post by Ehkz Mon Aug 20, 2012 5:50 am

So, I'm working on a build for my character I'm making on PC, the idea is that he's a tank, lowish attack, high health sort of thing, with a little bit of miracles to heal him up. I've theorycrafted my way to these stats (below) given that I'll be using Giant's Armor/Silver Knight's Shield/Havel's Ring/Ring of Favor and Protection (or Darkwood Grain Ring if I decide on mobility).

    SL102
    Vitality 50
    Attunement 16
    Endurance 38
    Strength 16
    Dexterity 12
    Reistance 15
    Intelligence 14
    Faith 24

Side-note: I haven't actually played through the game on a console, but I've seen my friend play most of the game and it looks incredibly fun.
Given that, I'm not sure what weapon to get.
I've been gravitating to getting a normal Halberd+15 because it seems like they have pretty good combos/range/base damage (with +15). But I was also looking at Divine Halberd+10, but I'm not sure how much my faith will scale with the damage.
So would a Divine Halberd+10 be better than a Halberd+15 with my faith/strength?

...and if you're against Halberds, I'm up for changing my build a little bit to fit other weapon needs; just give me a reason why! happy

Edit: http://tinyurl.com/8fjhmox Found this calculator, but I'm still torn. Even thinking about Lightning+5 Halberd now.

This is really open-ended, so before I continue with any advice, I have to ask; do you intend to stay only at level 102 or do you plan to push forward to the PvP standard of level 120? If you push forward to 120 you have several options available to you because of the 18 extra soul levels, and I need to know if it's important to point those out or not :|

EDIT: Also, I see this is your first post, so welcome to the forums! And your name seems familiar actually, so if you don't mind me asking on a whim, did you ever play Dissidia Final Fantasy?

Learning that the PVP standard is 120, I'm glad I have some wiggle room haha. I'm not quite sure what to do with the extra 18 levels, if I get a heavier weapon, I might need a couple more endurance to still ninja flip. I also was thinking about putting more into my faith for some more interesting miracles.
What could/should I do with those levels?

And thanks for the welcome! big grin Haven't played Dissidia Final Fantasy though silly, this is however my primary character name nowadays.

Was about to have a potential "small world" moment if you had. I used to play that and on some forums for that game there was a guy who always went by Ehx, but apparently that's not you lol!

Anyway, you have several options here, but before I explain them I will say as a little aside fact that you have points in places where you don't really need them. For instance, the points in Resistance are mostly pointless, and unless you decide to heavily utilize sorceries, so are the few points you had in Intelligence. Taking those points out will allow you to put them into more beneficial stats, so I highly reccomend you do so.

The first path is to build the Halberd to +15, speccing into Dexterity with the rest of your points and utilizing pyromancy as a spellcasting medium. The Dexterity will increase the speed with which you cast your pyromancies, as well as provide some decent damage on the Halberd. Here is an example of what I'm thinking of with this.

Second is that you could go all the way into Faith as your main stat. You would likely use two weapons, one at +15 and one at +10 Divine. The +15 one you would have so that you can use a damage buffing Miracle on it, temporarily providing more damage than the +10 Divine weapon for high-tension situations such as boss fights or invasions, but the Divine would be your primary weapon for general situations. This also gives you access to more powerful and useful miracles. Here is an example of this idea. The second weapon can be anything you want, it doesn't have to be a Halberd. If you choose to do this, which one you make Divine and which one you make +15 are up to your personal preference in movesets.

The last path is to go balls-to-the-walls tanky, speccing into as much vitality as possible and utilizing HP-increasing items to maximize this tankiness while building your Halberd to +5 Lightning. This build is probably the most controversial as many players tend to look at it as "cheap," but that's mostly because it's very effective and simple, so don't let that dissuade you as it's a nice build to get accustomed to the game with. As per the course, here's an example of mine.

Now I'm not going to say those are the absolute best options or the only options. There are a few other ways you could potentially take this, but these were the most apparent paths to me. My examples are also probably not the most optimized for each strategy since I made them up quickly without looking too deep into the build. That being said, just take them as guidelines and feel free to tweak things around as you see fit, you don't have to follow these note-for-note, and I actually don't expect you to happy

    Anyway, hope this helps winking

Awesome, thanks for the detailed input, the resistance I agree is a little useless, but I was looking at a little bit of intelligence for spells like hidden body/weapon. Not sure if they're useful enough in PVP to put the points in or not.

For now I'm really interested in the building faith idea. Thanks big grin

For your first playthrough, I would recommend something that lets you play around with a bunch of options.

Having a focused build excludes a number of options; they're meant for PvP, and I'd say play through the game with something more general so you can try out different weapons. A focused build, by it's nature, has the minimum stats to wield a certain weapon, with limited options. If you're ok with that, fine, but personally I wanted to experiment quite a bit with my first character in terms of weapons. So I focused on vit, end, str, dex. Allowed me to use every weapon in the game, and a lot of the shields. Had a lot of fun doing it, and learned what weapons I liked and didn't like. Helped me in my future builds as well. I'm never a fan of magic in most games; usually the implementation is overpowered, but limited uses, and lame. This game is good, except when it lags.

So, first time through the game, are you looking to mess around or do a focused pvp build?

More or less I'm making my character in hopes to PVP with my friend later in the levels. That being said, I thought it'd be helpful if I mapped out my end game before I started to avoid wasting points. I realize I won't be able to experiment with most of the weapons but that's not a huge deal to me because I've seen my friend use probably 75% of them haha.

I'm very interested in exploring the whole game (it's a wonderfully created world), and I'm honestly trying to get stats out of the way so I'm not stopping for a long time and seeing if items are worth getting or not.

Besides I can always make other characters happy.

It doesnt matter what people tell you is a good weapon you have to be comfortable with the move set as one of your primary aspects when looking for a suitable weapon
PS im not saying that its impossible for someones suggestion to work for you just dont let other people opinion form your own
