Freezing/Crash issue

Everytime I take damage from an enemy attack the game freezes. (tested it about 4 times already). Game ends up not responding. Can close through task manager but the DATA.exe process still hangs and prevents any type of relaunch of the game. When attempting to shutdown/restart, it continues to show "Shutting Down" but fails to do so. Anybody heard of any similar problems?

pretty depressing, the game has been out for over 10 hours and I still haven't found anyone with similar issues.

NO WAY!!. BRO same thing is happening to me happens in the exact same spot, I literally cant find ANYONE with this problem? Have you found a fix????

Whats your computer like?

pretty new comp for me. GTX 560ti, I5-2500k, asrock p67 extreme 4. Same thing happens to me.

I don't have the PC version, but I'll have a search around see if I can find a fix for you guys.

I'm no computer expert, but maybe its a program that is interfering with it, I know the controller driver I used, XBCD, made my computer crash because I'm using Windows 7 64bit, and I turned on 'full range'. Perhaps its like that, is there anything you've added in terms of helping you play at all? Like my XBCD?

No I use wired controller. I read somewhere about the GFWL compatibility mode should be unchecked, because also, when the game freezes and I try to play it again, I usually cant sign into GFWL. Do you know where this compatibility mode thing is

Did you set up a new one or use an existing one? I used my gamertag, and I've had no problems, perhaps something that's not correct for you was correct for me when I started

Yeah Im using my xbox live gamertag profile. I dont even know a support number or email I could reach either....this sucks ***

I'm not sure, I'm sorry, it may just be how it is right now, and FROM will fix is asap (I hope so, I really do, everyone deserves to play this wonderful game). I checked online as you probably did, didn't find anything fixing about it, did find a few posts like yours though.

Just found out it ONLY freezes when Im not logged into games for windows live. So GFWL is the damn problem....

well it's somewhat comforting to wake up and see i'm not the only one.

running DS with GTX 570, i5 3570k, asus P8 Z77-V LX

used my existing Xbox Live acct. and using the official xbox360 controller (wired only)
haven't tried anything with the compatibility mode yet.

other observation I noticed:
- Steam continues to fail validating 1 item every time I try to verify the game files.
It will fail to validate and attempt to reacquire the bad file. It will "successfully" download but when you try to validate again the problem remains.

- I've looked around and this also seems to be a common problem with a number of different titles. unfortunately I wasn't able to find a thread where they happened to fix their issues.

- Windowed/un-windowed doesn't make a difference, same goes for any of the in game "PC settings" when toggled or modified.- reinstalled about 4 different times, no effect.

Cases where it has froze:
being hit by an arrow (to the kn....ehhh nvm)
melee by an enemy
hit by the cannon ball (stairs)
performing a backstab
blocking a melee attack

More notes.

My original assumption was that the DATA.exe was preventing relaunching of the game and preventing my PC from properly shutting down.

I finally was able to remove the DATA.exe process by simply logging off the win7 profile and logging back in. DATA.exe was removed and I was able to relaunch the game. However with the DATA.exe removed, my PC was still unable to properly shut down and was hung up on the "Shutting Down" screen.

Changes after relaunching game client:
first time I relaunched the game there was no in game sound, and GFWL was completely disabled preventing me from playing signing on and playing online. The freezing also did not occur as I was able to take damage get hit while blocking or not.

On my second test. sound was ok and not freezing happened.

So I guess I'm starting to also believe that GFWL is the cause.

ok Guys i figured out the problem it is because your xbox 360 controller is plugged in....

HAHA i just figured this out! but why??? and how can we fix this?

this thread in the steam forums supposedly has a fix for the issue. I have yet to try it tho.

finally some good news...so relieving.

game actually unfreezes after controller is unplugged. and continues to freeze after you plug it back in. something with the drivers and GFWL. (considering that the controllers without the fix werent causing any problems when GFWL was disabled)

used the xbox 360 controller fix in that thread link.

game is finally running smoothly.
