If you'd like a more consistant way to soul farm, then there's no better location than the Painted World.

I've tried a pure pyro and didn't like it.
The spells were just so much the same; throwing fire, burst fire at close range... and that's about it. The poison breaths suck, the utility spells are ok (flash sweat, iron flesh)... I find it better to just supplement a build. With an ATT of 16, its not a big investment, and you'll have a lot of pyromancy options.
What builds have you tried so far Joe? Personally, I find the weapon you select to be the most important for how the game is played.

lets see....
my first char was a deprived, i had a bad time. quit that quick...this will take forever. i have played sorc, war, dep, theif, bandit, and now pyro. sorc and bandit mostly. the only classes i think i havent tried are the cleric, hunter. as far as weapons go. i kinda see whatyou are saying, but i am always up for replacing my weapon if i find something stronger, or that i just like better. i am not experienced enough with the game to build a class around a weapon yet, nor do i really think i would enjoy that.
on my pyro im building him much like my bandit. high end str vit. hell im looking at it right now im vit 22 att 16 end 32 str 20 dex 18 r 12 i 10 f 8 i am farming now to build up str and end so i can try out a few new swords i have found. the pyromancy is mostly just for stick situations.

Your starting class doesn't matter really.
Here's a couple of my favourite builds:
40 str/ 40 dex/ 40 vit/ 40 end and maybe 12 ATT. Gives you access to tons of weapons to try out, Composite bow is awesome, lots of ways to play the game.
Dex/Faith build: get a high Dex first, some endurance, some vit, then start pushing faith to get some great miracles.
Dex/Int: Spell caster, plays totally different than the others. Maybe get a STR of 16 and sue the Moonlight Great Sword.
The class you pick at the start doesn't matter too much; what matters to me mots is the weapon selection. It'll get boring if you juts have one weapon. Try a fast one, that's buffed with a spell or resin. Try a big, two handed one like a Bastard Sword. Try a long spear like a pike. Try a heavily armoured Knight that doesn't have the speed, but can tank like crazy.
The weapon you have changes the way you fight, and changes the armour options and sometimes the build options.
